Cavanaugh on Cooper and Lawrence

I agree with you about Gregory. He may give the Cowboys a light discount, but f he gets a $16 million offer from another team and Jerry offers $12 million, Gregory would be an idiot not to take the bigger paycheck.

Cooper is the most tradeable player I think. He is only 25 and he is a very good receiver. If Julio Jones can get $22 million, then someone in this league might be willing to part with a draft pick to get Cooper. Trading players give the Cowboys the chance to at least pick the teams they go to, to a certain extent.

I struggle with LVE. I am worried if we sign him he will regress. How do we know his better play at the end of the year was not the result of desperation knowing he was in a contract year? I am leaning to wanting him back, but they have Jabril Cox waiting to come back from a knee injury. Do they need LVE?

I think Gallup will sign elsewhere. More likely the Cowboys sign Wilson and Malik Turner. I thought Turner showed some YAC ability when he got in their. Maybe he will be the surprise player in 2022 the way Wilson was in 2021.

They can clear about $54 million by restructuring Lawrence, Tyron Smith, Collins, Zack Martin, and Dak, while trading Cooper. That would give them about $30 million to sign Gregory and some other players.

I think they should focus on making the defense better in 2022. Balance the offense and clean up the mistakes. That is their quickest path to championship contention.
Replying strictly to the Gregory situation, the AAV doesn't much matter.

It's all about the guaranteed money.

If in your scenario another team is offering 4 for 64, but only 10 ish guaranteed vs a Jerry offer of 4 for 50, but 20-25 guaranteed, the Dallas offer is much better.....especially in Gregorys case of not being the most reliable dude.

This is how we get stuck with players being uncuttable.

I'm not saying don't resign him, I just wish he would be cheaper than he is probably going to be.

I think there will be some real interest from GMs that will be fired soon without progress and can't get a pass rusher elsewhere.

A serious overpay is probably coming.....considering the above circumstances added to Jerry's history.

Couldn't have said it any better.

There's 1 of 2 things we'll find out after FA.

If we keep all these guys that shiuld just go and collect the comp picks for doing so. Then we know MM has literally no say and this is as it's been the last 26 years going into next season.

If they do let the majority of those 21 UFAs from the 53 man roster leave the HC and his coaches are getting their guys and alot more say than years past.
Which is exactly what we need. Get rid of EVERYONE that was drafted by Garrett not named Dak, Zeke and Martin. We dont really have a choice lol.

I don't know. I don't think Randy did a good job slowing down the 49ers.

He looks like a speed rusher for 3rd and longs.

He was the best player for the 49ers at the end of that game. Too bad he plays for us lol

The Chiefs said Cooper was the guy they were worried about game planning against. When he went out last year we weren't very good.

We weren't very good when Dak "went out" either. Except for Dalton beating the Niners.

Gregory is #1 priority? Why?

I mean, I know ya'll think he's an All-Pro and all, but this dude had like 4 good games and that was it. He make bonehead decisions, still seems immature, and will surly want more than he is worth (And Jerry will give it to him). The sad thing is he will 100% get more from the Cowboys then he would in free agency simply because of the way this organization over values talent that it drafts.

I feel Gregory is just another example of one of Jerry's guys that he just refuses to let go when it would be best to just walk away from this one.
Completely agree. Jerry took a chance drafting him with his character issues. Gregory has let the team down over and over since he's been drafted.

He has one good season (of course in a contract year) and now in Jerry's eyes he is a success.

Jerry will pay whatever it costs to keep him, just like he did with Zeke.

Zeke was very similar. He had off the field issues but Jerry stood by him from day one. Zeke rewarded Jerry by robbing him on his new contract. Gregory will do the same

Kind of off topic... Jeff Cavanaugh is really good at 105.3 The Fan. When and why did Bobby Belt replace Mike Fisher as their Cowboys Insider?

Gregory is a really good player when he is focused and available. Too many variables to sort through for a top end pay day. I doubt his Agent is angling for a home town discount, particularly knowing how soft the guy writing checks is.

I agree with that, Greggory is awesome. I never understood asking someone to take a paycut but I hope Lawrence does, I don’t see him getting a big contract somewhere else. On Cooper, for that money get someone else, but he was our best WR the past few years and Ceedee hasn’t shown much. So both are probably gone. I could see Lawrence taking a paycut and then stop trying, not report until camp, then limp along as many games as he can go before retiring.

1) I hope they can trade Cooper for something and not just outright cut him

2) I like this approach. Lawrence isn't "elite" but he's still quite good and better than any DE option on our roster BY FAR

3) It comes down to cost. I would like to have Gregory back but if they have to sign him to some ridiculous, deal, pass. Granted, if they can't figure out a way to keep Lawrence, then they might be stuck overpaying for Gregory

4) They should have crap canned the OL coach. That would have been move #1 in fixing the OL. I hope this draft is heavy on OL and DL.

I'd like to see them bring back Kearse and Hooker if possible on cheapish deals.

What wouldn’t be a bad deal would be trading Cooper to the Jags for their second or third round pick. They are at the top of the round, so they are at a premium for the round. Can catch a guy who falls outside the round he could/should have been drafted in. Jacksonville has the cap, the room and a need.

It's good to see Gregory back in the NFL, he made some key plays at times this year but hope they don't plan to break the bank for a player with 16.5 career sacks who hurt his team in the playoffs.

It's just the cold hard reality of this team

We've mismanaged the cap (Stephen), mishandled the roster (Stephen and Jerry), and now have to pay for it by cutting our losses with two of our most talented players.

Gregory needs to remember how Jerry and the Cowboys never gave up on him and helped him out so much get his mental and life in order. Hope he gives the Cowboys a team discount. Maybe agree to around $10 mil / season.

It sounds good in theory, but when the Texans offer 5y/75m$ because they have way too much cap space… how likely do you think it is that the man turns down 30-40m$ to return a favor?

Think Cooper will not be a Cowboy in 2022 talking to people

Whispers are Lawrence will be asked to take a paycut.

#1 priority this offseason is to sign Randy Gregory.

Fixing the OL is a priority this offseason.

Coop's talent is wasted here,,, maybe if they can give dak a full 60 seconds pass protection then Coop can shine,,, maybe.

Coops production here is what its been since he came into the league. He is not consistent and hasnt been since he came into the league. Dont make him into a top 3 WR just because he's paid like it. He runs the best routes in the league but doesnt play like it. If he put in the work that T.O did. He'd be the best WR in the game.

I called it early.

The reason Gregory is their top priority is because he’s really good and they can’t get anyone else like him.

He fizzled out down the stretch but he looked ridiculous at times.

If Gregory is the priority, Lawrence is likely gone. Gregory and Parsons should be more than enough on the edge. Don't need Lawrence at $19.

Coop’s salary becomes guaranteed on March 20th. If nothing gets worked before then he’ll probably be released on March 19th.
