Thomas was a 3rd round pick by Green Bay in 2004. He only played for them 1 year before being cut. Was picked up by NO in 2005 & only played for them 1 year before being cut in August 2005. One or 2 other teams took a look at him but nobody signed him until we did. He was a good prospect out of Montana State and haven't found any reason to explain why GB or NO cut him. It could be that now he gets it and we lucky to find him or else he looks good in TC & maybe preseason but in regular season he doesn't show up. Will wait and see but I really hope he works out for us cause we really need a young player who can really contribute at that position.

I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing him replace Jones or Reeves, preferrably Jones. Add one of the rookies and put the other on the practice squad and there are our corners.

No idea about what happened in NO but this is what's on his wikipedia page..

Thomas' play took a severe downturn after the Packers' 2005 bye week. In Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings, he allowed Minnesota WR Marcus Robinson out of bounds, stopping the clock on a critical last minute Vikings drive that ended up costing the Packers the game. After embarrassing himself by falling down on a play after committing a critical hands to the face penalty against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8; Thomas was benched and rookie Mike Hawkins took his place. Thomas was later waived by Green Bay on November 2nd, 2005 He was then picked up by the New Orleans Saints on November 3rd, 2005.

Just costly mental errors..

He was also drafted the same year as Ahmad Carroll. Reportedly, the two got into a fight after a team meeting, so there was some friction. May have led to his release from GB as they stuck with the higher salaried first round pick.

However, he played lousy in NO.

Amen.

Our corners are in bad shape [not your Newman. You rock!] and we need all the help we can get.

I still have hopes for Brown, also.

I think the reason for his success might be the scheme that we run

when we start running the real scheme things might be different.

Back when he was drafted he was the one Parcells mentioned in his post draft pc, that they liked but was taken before their pick.

Thanks for the info. GB sure gave up on him awfully early. He must have shown something for GB to initially make him a starter. Remember Parcells usually gives them 3 years so long as they show a little improvement ieach year. As for getting in a fight with Carroll, w/o knowing the details it just sounds to me like something rookies do. He probably lost his confidence as a result and that could explain his play in NO. He's 2 years older now & maybe a little more mature. The Cowboys must have seen something on tape to warrant bringing him on board. So far so good, but we'll learn a heck of a lot more during those preseason games. I just hope our failure to address the CB situation earlier in the draft then the 7th round doesn't come back to haunt us. Admit to being concerned about Henry (who seems to have injury concerns) since he's been here and Glenn as well.

I'm sure you've enjoyed seeing him almost exclusively at free safety, then.

I do hope we have someone that steps up and looks better than J. Reeves has.

Yes, Reeves is still getting burned by undrafted free agents. I really like this Thomas guy. He has an abiltiy to knock the ball away at the last minute.

What is the real scheme?

an actual game-level scheme with blitzing etc. Wade leaves his corners on an island a lot -- that's why his D's tend to give up big plays at times. the REAL test is how the DBs play under these conditions

I'm afraid Thomas is fool's gold. And this is from someone who saw him in a college all-star game and thought he looked really good. I can see why Parcells liked him, too, as he has good size for a corner.

But think about it -- Carroll was a bust for GB, and New Orleans has needed corners for, well, forever. They both cut him. Why?

I don't think it's because he lacks ability -- I thought I could see that even in the few minutes I saw him on TV. It's for other reasons. He either isn't smart or is a knucklehead or he has that Pete Hunter ability to totally lose concentration at times.

Well you hope he learns from mistakes and is better prepared now to do the job. Because things did not go great for you at the start of your career does not mean it has to stay that way.

The one positive that we can, hopefully, take is that two years and two teams later he is a smarter football player. Smart enough to crack the 53? Tough to tell at this point, but the camp reports have been positive. That's a plus.
