Mitchell had the best "3-cone" and "Shuttle" times at the combine for DB's.

A terrific pickup in round 7.

Tangent, but if we had taken Mitchell in the 4th and Hitchens in the 7th a lot of the people complaining about Hitchens would be very happy - and we still got both players.

There's a lot of truth in what you posted.

I think many folks would up the Cowboys overall draft grade by a 1/2... which is kinda goofy because they would end up with the same players.

Yes, Revis is the only player I recall ever having a better 3-cone. Revis 6.56, Mitchell 6.57.

Really? Wow! I didn't realize that. So his only problem is that he doesn't have great straight line speed and needs to work on technique. We can't teach speed but if we can get his technique better then this pick has been worth it... yes??

He has a better 20-yard split than Terrence Newman despite Newman running a 4.37 forty.
Twenty Yard:
Newman: 2.61
Mitchell: 2.59

I read some place about Mitchell's start for the "40" at the combine didn't go smoothly and that may have contributed to his poor time.

I noticed this as well (times not comparisons - I'd love to learn how you have all this info so readily available) which leads me to believe that he will be better in the slot than the outside. He's a hand fighter so that will have to be coached but if he has the hips and quickness that they say, slot, in my opinion, is his best spot.

Ironically, true.

Give me Telvin Smith or maybe Pierre Desir in the 4th and I'd be even happier ;)

Do you know if he improved his forty at his pro-day? Even with a poor forty at the combine but these other good stats and good rankings from the "experts" wonder why he dropped all the way to almost UDFA status.

True but even on the rerun at his proday he still ran 4.52 which while respectable still isn't deep speed. That being said, it dawns on me that there have been quite a few corners that ran in this range. What they had though, that he doesn't have, is great technique. That's the big knock on him right now. Hopefully we can fix that and will have made a great find.

He would also be a good "zone" corner because he wouldn't have to follow his guy all across the field.

Just for grins I looked up Richard Sherman's combine #'s...

4.56 40
6.82 3-cone
4.33 shuttle

Yep .. but Sherman is 3 inches taller and developed exactly what we were just talking about... technique. Also, Sherman is very physical. Mitchell is the opposite of that. Like I said, I hope that we can coach him up to improve his technique and reduce his "business decisions" and have found that hidden gem.

I don't see a lack of physicality with Mitchell. He might be too physical in pass coverage. In run support, he rarely has a Safety nearby and is the last line of defense on outside runs. He appears to be coached to keep his feet and not give up the big play. He typical CB taking out the RBs feet for a Wow type play is not a good option for him with nobody behind him. If he misses, then the RB is off to the races down the sideline. In situations were he had deep help he was more physical.
