-Bryon Jones was a good shadow CB, who was a poor tackler even for the CB position and had zero ball instincts. He was a poor man's Terrence Newman. Good player, but far from elite, certainly not worth his current price tag.
-Great Corners have the ability to do it all, cover, tackle and take away the football. Just look at the stats of some of the greats, bunch of intercepts in a year to year basis. Keep in mind, we are in a passing league now, those numbers should even be higher.
Not even close. Completely different players coming out of college. We'll see how he develops under this defensive coaching staff.
And good to see him working against some quality players as well in JuJu and his big bro.Nice to see these guys working.
If Diggs becomes as good as Jones, we did very wellEhh, I don't agree at all. He was handcuffed by an outdated scheme and zero safety help and still played at an All-Pro level the last 2 years.
I wouldn't have paid him what Miami gave him, but I think this board undervalued him. The "he gets no picks" argument quickly identifies the casual football fan from those who better understand the game, especially understand DB's.
Yeah, one has great hands and I'm not sure the other has any at all.
We need some lucky breaks in that secondary now that we have lost the bulwark Heath. Gonna be tough going with his consistent pro bowl level performance
He was a great cover guy. But he was about as bad a corner as there ever was at picking the ball off.
He also showed little leadership on defense. Was not an outspoken or emotional leader. Not a big hitter by any stretch.
And no, I am not in agreement that great CB's rarely pick the ball off.
1 pick in 5 years is beyond ridiculous.
In my book he was more on the side of overrated. I think we can say that the Cowboys agreed with that assesment.
He doesn't have to be as good as Jones. Even if he plays well it's the right move.If Diggs becomes as good as Jones, we did very well
I actually think they got two firsts for BucknerHe doesn't have to be as good as Jones. Even if he plays well it's the right move.
Byron Jones is 28 and has APY of $16.3M the next 5 years.
Trevon Diggs is 22 and on a rookie contract the next 4 years.
The 49ers traded DeForest Buckner, a darn good payer, for a 1st round pick which they used for Javon Kinlaw.
Kinlaw (6-6/310, Age 23) is under contract for 5 years (5th year option for 1st round picks) at a reasonable contract. Buckner (6-7, 291 Age 26) just signed an extension for the next 5 years with an APY of $16.3M.
Kinlaw's 2020 cap # is somewhere around $2M , Buckner's is $23,378,000. Kinlaw just needs to not suck and the 49ers replaced him while saving $21M in cap room. Same deal for Diggs. The difference is the 49ers traded Buckner before they lost him so they got immediate value and used the pick acquired in the trade to replace him. If we knew we we weren't going to re-sign Byron, we probably should have traded him last season. The Front Office was just in fantasy land thinking we were going to sneak into the playoffs and then turn on a light switch to become dominant.

umm Covid, lockdowns, being safe, no OTAs etc all virtual..im thinking lighten up they get pass for putting forth some effort..Enough with the HOF backyard workouts......sheesh.
Starting CBs play over 1000 snaps per season.
5 INTs in a season is considered very good.
QBs throw the most picks in the 2nd half when their team is losing. That means most picks happen when the team that made the pick was winning anyway.
If a CB has 5 picks that at most 5 games that were impacted. The team was likely winning most of those games without the INT.
INTs are a bit over-rated.
