ZONERS

I have read numerous reports, saying in order for us to beat the Colts our Cowboys must run the football often to keep Manning off the football field--which on the surface sounds valid.

However, Don't you ZONERS believe we should stay balanced? Pass/run approx 50-50 to win the game......we are just to good with ROMO to settle on running a greater percentage of the time--IMO.

Big Question: if Big Bill does decide to gameplan for more running in this game, can OUR OFFINSIVE LINE run block enough to win a game by running the ball down INDY's throat? I don't feel good about it.

Am I wrong? What do you ZONERS believe we should do? :star:

I believe, we're gonna start strong on the running game and lets just HOPE! we have success. b/c getting into a Throwing contest with Manning is just no competition...

ask the patriots..:(

I think the answer is simple... if we are ripping off 5-7 yards per carry... then passing should slightly less...

I dont buy into the "you need to run to setup the pass" because then the argument can be "passing sets up the run"

I think that the flow of the game or whatever is success on that given day is what you go with.

They are DEAD LAST int the league when it comes to run defense. Why not find out why they are DEAD LAST before we try anything else?

Whats the quote. The best defense is a great ball control offense. If the opposing teams offense is off the field then they can't score. You don't keep them off the field if you are throwing for 450 yards.

Need an example? See last weeks Chargers/Bengals game. Almost 1,000 yards offense and 90 points scored.

The Colts run D is dead last in the league, both in yards per game and yards per rush. And you want to keep their offense off the field, so it seems like a no-brainer to take a gind-it-out approach. But...

We've also got the #2 rated passer in the NFL.

Dallas is 6th in total offense. Know how many of league's top 9 offenses the Colts have faced this season? Zero.

Score and score often. There is no way we are going to keep them out of the endzone. Open up the offense is the only key to winning IMO

Maybe they are dead last because people keep trying to beat them by running down their throats and slowing the game down. Then they quickly strike and equal the 8 minute drive in 1:30. Just a thought that the running defense is a result of how people play them and not neccesarily an indication that it is an effective strategy against them.

I agree CrazyCowboy! Bill will indeed try and run it down Indy's throat in the beginning. Most likely to get a feel for how our run blocking performs. But don't think for a second that Bill won't take some shots down the field.

Romo is too much of a weapon for Bill to not utilize his arm and his WR's. Glenn should be ready to play as well. We will probably have all our WR's ready to go this Sunday.

Should be fun to watch. I just hope Zimmer puts our defense into an attack mode and gets after Peyton. Need to knock him on his butt a few times.

They're dead last in yards per rush too. Sorry, your theory holds no water.

The Colts are pretty bad against the pass as well, allowing a 64.6% completion rate. The Cowboys are second in the league (behind the Colts) in 3rd down conversion percentage, but the Colts are 30th at preventing 3rd down conversions.

The Colts haven't been getting a lot of pressure on the QB (only 15 sacks, tied for 29th/30th). They also haven't gotten a lot of turnovers (particularly when you consider that 5 of their 16 forced turnovers came in one game).

What they have done well convert 3rd downs on offense. However, I think that Dallas may have an advantage here because they are very good at converting on 3rd down but also decent at stopping 3rd down conversions.

Of course, turnovers will play a big role, and Dallas will have to work hard to avoid them, because you can't count on getting turnovers from Indy. They have only turned to ball over 8 times in nine games.

I expect this game to be a high scoring affair, and the winner will be the team that can stop their opponent on third down (assuming that either team can actually force a third down). For that reason, I think the matchup favors Dallas, but only slightly.

ok, after a quick analysis here is what is interesting:

- Indy gives up the most yards per game rushing and yards per carry in the NFL
- Indy has the 4th highest passing completion percentage in the league
- they give up the 2nd lowest number of passing yards per game

how do they have the 2nd lowest number of yards but the 4th highest percentage complete at the same time? Because they have the league lowest number of attempted passes against them.

It makes my point earlier. They give up the most rushing yards because everyone plays the same way against them. Run to kill the clock and keep Manning off the field. At least that is what it looks like to me.

They are also 8th in the league opponents' yards per passing attempt. Combined with the high completion percentage, you've got to figure that they are essentially taking away anything deep and allowing completions underneath. Against bad offenses, their strategy probably works well, but Dallas is very capable of 12+ play drives, and they are also one of the best in the league at scoring TD's in the red zone (never thought I'd write that again).

It's real simple...

1. They have the league's worst run defense.

2. They have Dwight Freeney (and don't even tell me he only has 1.5 sacks, he is STILL playing good)

That means we run the ball and call quick passes. If we start trying to throw deep on them (calling 7 step drops) Romo will get hammered.
