Cedric Benson a No Show Today at OTAs... Released By Bears

It's not like they lost a transformative talent at the height of his powers. He was cruising towards "bustville" anyway.

Exhibit A-1000 illustrating that great success in a "major" conference does not guarantee anything. Time and time again I see RBs that played at non-BCS schools getting bashed due to the level of talent thay played against. Well, the other side of that story is the talent a RB is playing with. Obviously those gaping holes opened by the UT line had much to do with Benson's success in college.

and the crap offense put on the field by the Bears had much to do with his failure in the NFL.

Bears cut Benson

Since he's a Texas guy, I thought you guys would like to know that Cedric Benson has been shown the door by the Chicago Bears.

Earlier in the offseason, he might have elicited some interest from Valley Ranch. But that seems doubtful with Marion Barber's Brinks truck payday, and the drafting of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, in the books.

Benson had his share of problems on the field and, obviously, his off-field issues of late spelled the end for the Texas-ex in Chicago. He'll probably go down as one of the biggest draft busts of this decade.

"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of 'team' will not play for the Chicago Bears."

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

no we shouldn't bring him in.....we don't need him.

Before anyone starts posting about bringing him in.

Should teams really be cutting players based on "arrests," rather than actual convictions? Seems like it isn't fair to take action before there has been a final disposition in the case. Arrest is not supposed to equal guilt. :(

If it is a consistent issue I think so. Where there is smoke there is fire.

Shouldn't people consider the possibility that there were more issues with him than just two "arrests" ?

Since Herr Goodell took over and since he is going to start coming down on teams because of what their players do away from the field, I guess they should be well within their rights to do so.

Of Course I think Goddell is a kook for this because he is going to force NFL teams into the Nanny profession with some of these guys.

Let's see, had a rap sheet at UT, reacted with angry tears on draft day because he "slipped" to No. 4, apparently is a drunk, arrested twice this off-season, lacks speed, quickness and wiggle, not necessarily a power runner, and his work ethic has been questioned.

Great draft pick, Bears. Bravo.

And let's give a shout out to those on here who clamored in this forum about his "abilities" before the draft that year. It could very well be some of the same people clamoring this year about another backs "abilities". Here's to them being closer to right about it this time.

He knew that he was walking on thin ice after the lake incident/arrest. Austin isn't that big, if I can afford to hail a cab there, I'm sure that a millionaire NFL athlete can. I am also quite sure that he was pretty drunk, because cops let a lot of questionable things go in college towns unless the dude was just completely swerving or speeding out of control. I doubt he was cautiously driving home and wrongly accused this time, so I understand why the Bears cut him, especially since I am sure they warned him to lay low after the boating arrest.

One thing though, I do believe he will find a home somewhere. Dallas is obviously well stacked at RB so there's no reason to ever think he'll end up here, but many teams could use an RB, especially with teams using 2 backs more and more. He is still young and he has some promise. Getting cut and having to sign for the vet minimum somewhere should be an eye opener for him like it has been with many other players. I'm hoping it works out because I've seen firsthand what he can do when he wants to actually play.

I was always astounded that he was drafted so high... In college he always ran crazy over the Baylor Bears, but got shut down when going against OU. He never could run too far past Tommie Harris. I always thought he was just OK, but never in a class as say Adrian Peterson.

He was drafted in 05 and by the way he's played in the pros, he wasn't even in the class of a Frank Gore and he was a 3rd rounder, and absolutely wasn't even in the class of Cowboys MB3 and he was a 4th round pick.

Too bad for him now. Maybe he can call the Wranglers.

This definitely has some truth to it. He was held to under 100 yards against both Michigan and OU's defenses in his senior year. I was definitely looking for stronger performances in those games especially since he destroyed the weaker schools in the Big 12 but that OU defense was like top 3 in the nation at the time I believe so I didn't put much into it. I think he can salvage his career somewhere still. As for the Bears, I bet they miss Thomas Jones a little right now.

What does this say about the credibility of the people that vouched for him and his innocence with the "boat incident"?

Yeah you got that right, but salvaging his career will be a tough road for him... I remember Merrill Hodge breaking down his game one time on (NFL Live I think) and it was amazing to see how many holes he actually ran away from after the O-line had blocking momentum in one direction. Hodge didn't seem very impressed with Benson's game.

Benson hasn't really done much with the opportunity he had anyway. Held out during his rookie contract, injured his first year, and just underachieved the rest of the way.

You put "released" in the header then in the first sentence it says

"Is Cedric Benson's time with the Chicago Bears' up?" Nothing in the article says he was released. What's with that?
