Wow, this kid was a dissapointment from day 1... I remember people actually wanting Dallas to trade up to get him.

You put "released" in the header then in the first sentence it says

"Is Cedric Benson's time with the Chicago Bears' up?" Nothing in the article says he was released. What's with that?

Maybe you should try reading multiple posts in a thread.

When Thomas Jones was there, Benson was actually pretty darn effective-for the reason being he had COMPETITION, so that made him play harder.

Really-this kid has alot of talent and potential, only to lay it to waste.

Only horn fans said this ^^^. C-Bong was chosen by many "gurus" to have the highest BUST factor in that draft. Rikki is there and VY/6 is on his way. Maybe Bongholio can go play with Jar-Jar now in KC since Johnson is getting old.

This definitely has some truth to it. He was held to under 100 yards against both Michigan and OU's defenses in his senior year. I was definitely looking for stronger performances in those games especially since he destroyed the weaker schools in the Big 12 but that OU defense was like top 3 in the nation at the time I believe so I didn't put much into it. I think he can salvage his career somewhere still. As for the Bears, I bet they miss Thomas Jones a little right now.
I never really thought that Benson realized his talent when he was at UT. He was good, but he wasn't good as many thought he would be. I thought the Bears reached for him. However, he was phenomenal as a high school athlete beginning in his sophomore season. It sucks to see these guys throw away all that talent.

A year? He hasn't even been suspended once. I don't think his issues are even in the realm of a year's suspension. Unless he was already in the program.

2 charges in a span of 5 weeks? that isn't going to sit too well w/ Goodell

it took me 2 1/2 years to do what Benson accomplished in about the span of a month

Shouldn't people consider the possibility that there were more issues with him than just two "arrests" ?

exactly, they probably are just using this as an excuse to get rid of Cedric Benson, the draft bust

and maybe pocket some of his signing bonus in the process

Midland Lee right? I watched them play a couple times when he was there. Also, Mmy best friend lived with his grandparents in Odessa over the summers and ran into Benson at a couple parties when they were in high school. He said Benson was arrogant and people gawked when he was around but it made sense because he already had an entourage and was treated like a celebrity out there. Pretty much everyone knew he was going to the NFL from around that time so I guess that didn't help his ego or feeling of invincibility very much. Hopefully he is finally starting to realize that he's not just gonna get a pass because of his talent. He has to work hard now because the playing field has leveled and he's not the superstar anymore. Like I said though, I wish him well and I hope he taps his potential.

I never thought Benson would be a great college player because he didn't really play well against the best defense. And I decided to look up the stats after I found he was cut. I started with top 20 because top 10 would just be too few games to judge.

Top 20 Rushing defenses
7 games, 145 carries, 142 yards, 3 TDs
That's just over 22 carries a game, under 1 yard a carry.

Top 30
10 games, 219 carries, 526 yards, 8 TDs
That's almost 22 carries a game, 2.4 yards a carry

Finally Top 40
16 games, 316 carries, 826 yards, 13 TDs
Just under 20 carries a game, 2.6 yards a carry.

If he showed he could play in the NFL he would have ran for a lot better against the best college defenses he played. You think the NFL is getting much easier?

His off the field troubles just make it that much worse for an average back. He should never have been a first round pick much less a top 5 pick.

Should teams really be cutting players based on "arrests," rather than actual convictions? Seems like it isn't fair to take action before there has been a final disposition in the case. Arrest is not supposed to equal guilt. :(

3 seasons
420 attempts
1593 yards
3.8 avg
10 TDs
26 receptions
180 yards
6.9 avg

His arrests are probably not the primary reason for his release. If he was gaining 1000 yards per season instead of 531 yards, then I doubt he gets cut. His production is not even at the Julius Jones level. Heck, it isn't even at Troy Hambrick's.

Just out of curiosity DanTanna, where was that picture taken from and did anyone die in that accident?

Tragedy aside, that is a great picture.

Leave it up to Mack Brown to ruin another promising athlete!!!

This kid was the probably the best running back I've seen in highschool ever! He literally won three state titles on his own! I thought he was going to win the Heisman in his sophmore year coming in to college. It's too bad. But again, another super athlete that Mack Brown ruined.
