CFP thread

so what? if everyone supposedly paints their face red does that mean something?
So you don’t actually have a reason why there shouldn’t be autobids?

By the way… Everyone doesn’t paint their face red so that’s a dumb example and a logical fallacy.

Why should there be no autobids? There are literally autobids in every sport on every level in the country.
Because auto bids gave us James Madison and Tulane. Dump those G5 auto bids, dump P4 conference champs as auto bids, cut NDs Top 12 designation.

Rank the 12 best. That’s it.

There are legal reasons why they can't just up and dump the whole G5/G6.
But as some noted, a potential way to get around that is just dump the autobid process altogether and just take the 12 or 16 highest ranked teams.

I've been saying the same thing for about 2 months now and no one listens.

I guess the only way to get people riled up is if it actually happens..... but if it does happen, people will EXPLODE
Yup. And then they'll increase it to 16 games. Another explosion, and then to 24. It's blatantly easy to see coming if one would simply let go of their preconceived notions of what should be.

That is simply not true. The G5/G6 conferences have no leverage to negotiate anything on par with an auto-bid. The auto bid for them is literally an act of charity to give the playoff a cinderella. Next year, only 1 G5/G6 team gets a bid so they have already chopped access in half. No contractual issues.

Fact is that the CFP is a very fluid situation and can change on a dime. It's already been modified from last year with ND's sweetheart deal and one less G5/G6 team. 2027 is probably going to see an even bigger change.

As soon as the SEC and Big 10 come to a compromise, the playoff is expanding. The argument is over how much and when. The Big 10 wants 24 teams and the SEC wants 16. One them is probably happening in 2027 bc there is too much money on the table and a giant hole in the schedule just begging for games.

That is simply not true.
Yes it is. If they were left out, they would sue. No way to tell what some judge somewhere would rule, but they would have a very, very strong case.

LOL!!! Newsflash: The big conferences are not charitable entities. They wouldn't piss on the G6 if every team was on fire. The reason why they have a G6 autobid is because there are legal ramifications if they don't.

They haven't "chopped access in half" because the G6 was never guaranteed more than 1 spot. Yes this past year the G6 had 2 spots because the ACC champion was so weak, but (under the current format) they've always had 1 guaranteed spot and that will continue.

They technically included them in part bc they feared an anti-trust lawsuit ......which may or may not have any merit. They just didn't want to deal with it so they gave the small guys a seat at the table. They also didn't want to appear to be stepping on the small schools bc inclusivity is all the rage these days. There are no legal contracts involved here. They could easilly get rid of the small schools simply by losing the autobids and going to a poll that heavily weights strength of schedule.

Yes, exactly. This restates what I said so I agree.

I highly doubt that, as they expand the number of playoff spots (which is coming) that they will take anything away from the G6. It’s just as easy to guarantee one spot in a 24 team playoff as it is to guarantee one spot in a 12 team playoff.

Heck, your best G6 teams crack the top 24 regularly so they wouldn’t even need an autobid. This year would’ve had 2 teams, last year 3.

Its actually easier to include the small programs in a 24 team playoff. The best G6 probably wouldn't win a game in the Big 10 or SEC most years, but by all means, lets be inclusive (charitable).

you just regurgitate any hatred you hear about ND.

AND just because you win a poor conference does not mean you should be in the Playoffs. There are like a dozen conferences and by your reasoning they all should get in. Are you foolish enough to think the Ivy League winner should get in?

They stated reason for the playoffs was so that the teams that COULD win it all would be included
which of course was always a lie
it was always about money

and the idea that a lawsuit would matter that much if you did not include teams like James Madison was always just a poor excuse

as this year showed, the likelihood of there EVER being more than 12 teams that could win it all is about the same as getting hit by lightning and is no excuse for including more JMU's

which is why the Auto Bids have been and always will be bogus

IF a team deserves to be in the playoffs its record will show that without the false positive winning a conference gives

They didn't chop anything in half. The 2 G6 teams getting in last year was a fluke due to the ACC's dumb tie-breakers and scheduling. They fixed that, so almost certainly there will be 4 P4 autobids and 1 G5, like normal. The same number of autobids (5) are in place this year.

The point was there was no contract or clear legal obligation to include them. They patched, if you prefer that word, the hole that allowed 2 of them in.

So much easier to simply expand the playoffs and let them in.

No playoffs in sports is predicated on "who could win it all." Only college football w/ the weird way of thinking.

Its an unusual sport bc there are 68 teams playing in "power conference". Then you have the G6 teams which adds another 60. So, when you are talking about playoff, ideally you want the 12 best teams seeded in order of ranking. Another way of stating that is we have the 12 most likely teams to be the best.

+1 +1 +1

I mean seriously.... why doesn't college basketball have this same problem? No one complains about Bryant College or Robert Morris making the Big Dance. The cream will rise to the top.
