But it is and since that is the reality of if then it is stupid for a player to announce ahead of time he is going to do something that is going to cost his team. On a TD Johnson may have caught it but it took others for it to happen yet he wants to act like this is all about him and draw the attention to himself? Sorry I don't get that. The league allows player to celebrate but he is putting on a 1 man show in a game that is supposed to be about team
I agree he shouldn't do anything that's going to cost his team 15 yards, and to go on record as predicting you will celebrate at all costs is not smart "since the refs will be ready and willing", but this league should probably concentrate on more serious matters, like conduct off the field...

Also, I do believe that a ton of guys celebrate touch downs, I.E. quarterbacks pump their fist, linemen sprint down the field high fivin, etc. It's a fun game, have fun.. Geesh

Pumping your fist is not excessive, high fiving in not excessive either and is allowed putting on a clown show is not. The league does not want trash talking rub your opponents face in it actions. It is called sportsmanship and while I know that is not important to many people now days I like the fact that the league still tries to promote some sense of sportsmanship. As for the league concentrating on off the field incidents they do that as well.

Not all people celebrate the same.

When the Cowboys score a touch down, i run around the room like a puppy with his tail caught on fire, on the other hand, you may smile and say, thank you Jesus.

Let people express themselves the way they want, without taking too long to do it, or being derogatory/dis-tasteful, explicit, etc. If the league put a band on fans celebrating, this NFL would completely DIE!

:signmast: What he said.

I am in total agreement with you on this Dooms. Football is the ultimate TEAM sport and has no room for individual attention-grabbing, nor should it. If they love the attention so much then they should be pro wrestlers, not football players.

I am all for being excited and celebrating after a score but do it with your teammates, on the sidelines. These guys do it in the endzone, alone, so that they will be sure to be caught by the cameras and end up on SportsCenter and for no other reason. It isn't about celebrating a score, it is about taking advantage of the "face time" to get on ESPN.

I wonder how many players get upset and feel like they have less value when their team scores a TD and the guy holding the ball does a little jig?

I dunno. Maybe its just me but I would think these guys actually don't mind when someone celebrates. Afterall, they just scored a TD and it really wouldn't suprise me if they preferred to see a guy celebrate over not scoring at all.....maybe thats just me.

I'm almost to the point where I'll say let the players celebrate as they see fit, but only on one condition:

Increase fines for rule violations by a (minimum) factor of 10.

So, if a touchdown celebration violates the rules, and it currently results in a fine of, say, $5,000, increase the fine to $50,000.

In 2003, Chad Johnson was fined $60,000 for celebrations and uniform alterations. I wonder how motivated he would be if he had to pay $600,000 in fines? How many game checks would that equal?

Oh, well. It would all go to charity anyway, so it's all good.

My only problem is if he free to celebrate then why can't other players (how many is too many?), celebrate every time as well & how long should those celebrations take, and who decides when they funny and when they cross the line? and how long should games be delayed while the celebrating going on? Taunting causes a penalty but isn't excessive celebration also a form of taunting? You know that if Chad can to it, every team in the NFL will have at lease one player who will do it.

Blah, he's an annoying loud mouth like his cousin. I also hate how he uses the distractions made by Owens and Moss, amoung others, to skate by, right under it all.

He's a slimy little guy, giving this league a bad reputation, and he needs to go away. MHO.
