Change a NFL Rule

What makes this rule a good idea in your opinion?
First, we would see more big catches and nice plays. But second, and most importantly, I think it is far easier to determine if a catch is made with the 1-foot rule versus the 2-feet rule. It would lead to fewer bad calls and replays.

NOTE: Don't get me wrong... I admit college football has bad calls or close calls now and then regarding whether or not a catch is a catch. But overall, it is much easier to judge one foot versus 2 feet.

Yes, but with that rule change downfield muggings would be far more common. Why would a cornerback ever allow a 40 yard pass when he can just slam into the dude to guarantee only 15 yards, if he thinks it can be caught. I think interference calls bailing out inaccurate throws is the lesser of two evils.

I personally would change the OT rules, if not in the regular season, absolutely in the playoffs.

OT Regular season, each team should get a chance to score. If the receiving team scores, they kick off and the other team gets a shot.
And then what happens if the other team scores too? Do you want to see college football situations where teams just go back and forth again and again in overtime?

Team A kicks a FG.....Team B must go for a TD

Team A scores a TD, misses PAT........Team B scores TD and can go for PAT

Team A scores TD + PAT....Team B scores TD and must go for 2

Team A doesn't score...Team B scores and wins

Team B creates a turnover and scores.....game over, Team B wins

Way too complex. Plus, with all due respect, I think it's silly to say to a team that they have to go for a TD after the other team gets a FG. Bottom line is this: If you don't like the current overtime rule, then win your game in regulation. Or find a defense that can actually stop you opponent once when it matters.

Also, I don't think the problem is as big as some people think it is. No game has ever been decided by a coin toss. It's been decided by the events that take place on the field. Winning the coin toss certainly didn't decide the game in Glendale last year, did it?

I absolutely agree 100%. I hate the spot foul for pass interference. Its the only penalty in the league where you can pick up 60 yards in 1 play. The way the NCAA does it is much better.

I would change two rules:

1. OT rules- Remove FG's from OT play. Teams must score a TD to win. Kickers today can hit from 60 yards, which means 2 or 3 first downs and the game is practically over. Keep it sudden death, 1st to score wins but must score a TD.

2. Not allow teams to pick 1st year Practise Squad players off a teams PS. This gives a team a chance to develop a raw draft pick. If they can't make the 53 man team in their 2nd year, then they can be picked up by another team.

i just think it is unfair if 2 evenly matched teams play a close score for score game , end up in OT and 1 team never gets the ball

Change the pass interference rule from a spot foul to 15 yards instead. It's gotten to the point where a PI call can change the outcome of a game, and a large percentage of the time the refs get it wrong. Making it a 15 yarder will lessen the event that a game is decided by one bad call.

edit: I see it's been covered. I should of read the other comments before posting.

I like the game the way it is.

Contrary to what most people here think a lot of thought has gone into the current rules and recent changes.

The league has to balance player safety and the integrity of the game and it gets tough.

I did think the one foot rule mentioned here has some merit since the league recently altered the rule with respect to defenders forcing out receivers along the sidelines.
One foot in bounds could further simplify sideline rulings.

But I probably wouldn't want to see it. To significant a chnage in how the games been played forever. It would also take out one of the best plays in football. The WR quickly controlling a pass and tapping two feet in bounds.

The only pet peeve I have is the illegal contact rule outside of 5 yards when it's called on the opposite side of the game action.

You know, it's 3rd and 2. The QB takes a quick drop and fires a ball incomplete on a quick slant to the right.

Play takes two seconds and the QB never even looked to the left.......but here comes the illegal contact on a WR on the left side that didn't even factor in the play and the offense gets bailed out.

No fair solution to this problem without introducing yet another judgement call for the refs to make and creating even more issues.

I just sit back and wait for a Cowboy player to do something and watch the league turn it into a "rule". No helmet rule, push off rule, horsecollar rule.. etc..

No changes to the OT please

If you can't stop a team on defense you deserve to lose.

I dont necessarily like the college OT rule, maybe it could be that the first team that scores wins, but the team that won the toss can only win by touchdown on the opening possession.

i think the pass int calls could be settled by just letting it be a reviewable penalty

-there should be a 5 and 15-yard roughing the quarterback rule
-more active players on roster
-horse collar shouldn't exist
-neither should the defenseless receiver rule
-celebrations OK...to a certain extent anyways
