Chargers cut Matt Wilhelm
Posted by Mike Florio on July 24, 2009 3:09 PM ET
The San Diego Chargers have released veteran linebacker Matt Wilhelm.

The team announced the move earlier this afternoon.

The six-year veteran, a third-round pick in 2003, started 14 games in 2007. Last year, he appeared in every game and started the first five of the season before being pulled from the starting lineup. He started two games later in the year.

Tim Dobbins, who replaced Wilhelm in the starting lineup last year, will now apparently have the full-time job.

Per NFLPA records, WIlhelm was due to earn a base salary of $2 million in 2009, $2.5 million in 2010, and $3 million in 2011.

As a vested veteran, he instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent.

One obvious possible landing spot would be Dallas, given that former Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is the head coach of the Cowboys.

So, was he cut because he sucked or because he was two expensive, though $ 2 mil does not seem exhor . . exorb . . . expensive.

(and I hate it when Wade brings in "his guys." they usually suck, like him)

Even though I am a Buckeye fan, they don't seem to fare well here except Terry Glenn that I can think of.

Very interesting. He would be the only big "thumper" backup LB on the team. I've been worried that we'd be dead if Bradie got hurt... Wilhelm would be serviceable.

I doubt we do it because we're already tight at LB, but I'd feel a lot better about the backup Mike if we did it.

Of course, Barbie would probably have to go. And that would break my heart.

The fact the Wilhelm has started before tells me he's better than barbie.

Seriously though, I'd rather give our youngsters a chance rather than signing Wilhelm, who interestingly enough, became expendable due to the Chargers signing Barnett.

Yeah, on researching some, it appears that Wilhelm was a Mo in SD? That's odd because I remember when he was drafted, the knock was that he was big and strong but didn't run well enough.

If that's his position, then we're full up there with Williams and Hodge.

Oh well, he's still > Barbie, though. :p:

Um, other than Keith Brooking and Igor Olshansky, who has Wade brought in that are "his guys"?

The jury is out on Brooking and Igor whether they'll suck or not.

Don't confuse the issue with facts.

*Shrugs* I think we've got enough good, young, talent in position to not have to bring the guy in for sure. But I could see him being here. It wouldn't surprise me.

just in case BC can not cope - I would not mind him hes played for Wade knows the system

05 - 30
06 - 26
07 - 97
08 - 51

He played six seasons with San Diego, recording 247 tackles and six interceptions

Did I hear my name? Nope, it's in lower case.

I wouldn't mind bringing him in and seeing if he can beat out Carpenter.

That wouldn't be hard. He's basically a figure skater who's been scamming Jerry as a linebacker.

I'm sure when Parcells used that term he was thinking of you. ;)

Yep, he said he wished he had more players like THUMPER. :D

If Wilhelm comes in and competes it is a good move. He either pushes Barbie off or Barbie plays well enough to hold him off. I don't see the problem either way.
