Michelle Wayland, of NBCSanDiego.com, reports San Diego Chargers LB Shawne Merriman was arrested early Sunday, Sept. 6, on suspicion of choking and restraining television reality show hostess and model Tila "Tequila" Nguyen, according to deputies. Police got a call at 3:45 a.m. Sunday from a woman who claimed to have been choked and restrained by a male at a home in Poway, Calif. Public Information Officer Jan Caldwell said, "Nguyen told deputies she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence." Nguyen signed a citizen's arrest at the scene, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment.

That's funny-weird. His GF had a dating reality TV show, where she dated males and females. Got into the biggest fight with my teenage daughter when I locked out the show from satellite.

Anyone else still want Merriman over Ware (and that includes SD fans, coaching staff and the front office)??

Headline: Former potentially considered Dallas Cowboy draft prospect arrested for choking reality TV star.

Sun, 06 Sep 2009 10:40:36 -0700

"Former potentially considered Dallas Cowboy draft prospect Shaun Merriman was arrested for choking Tila Nguyen. Although the Dallas Cowboys did not select Shaun Merriman, the Dallas Cowboys had the opportunity to select him with the 11th pick in the 2005 NFL draft but didn't. Although Shaun Merriman is not on the Dallas Cowboys and never has been and has nothing to do with the Dallas Cowboys, Shaun Merriman will always be linked to the Dallas Cowboys. When Dallas Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager Jerry Jones was asked whether this was a distraction for his team he replied no comment. The Dallas Cowboys locker room was eerily silent over this incident, only time will tell how the Dallas Cowboys are able to cope with the transgressions of a player that is not and has never been on there team. Shawne Merriman busted for battery, false imprisonment

Posted by Mike Florio on September 6, 2009 1:22 PM ET
The days prior to the 2008 regular-season opener were dominated by discussion regarding whether Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman would be able to play due to a torn PCL.

This year, the question is whether Merriman will be able to play after allegedly assaulting a D-level television celebrity named Tila Tequila.

Merriman allegedly "choked and physically restrained" Tequila as she tried to leave his San Diego residence.

He was taken into custody at 3:45 a.m. local time and charged with battery and false imprisonment. Tequila was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The timing for Merriman is horrendous. He has been talking routinely regarding a plan to have a huge season in 2009, in the hopes of silencing critics who say that his play dropped dramatically after his suspension for steroids. As he enters his contract year, Merriman could be facing discipline from the team and/or the league for the arrest.

That said, because he's a first offender, there's a chance that neither the league nor the team will act until the legal process plays itself out.

Stay tuned for more as developments emerge.

What an idiot. I can't imagine how stupid you have to be to do these kinds of things that could cost him a shot at huge new contract.

Not to mention the fact that he's obviously a *****. Only a ***** beats up a woman.

I am so glad we chose Ware.

I asked Tom Ciskowski if there was much debate in the draft room between Ware and Merriman.

He said absolutely not and said this: "We picked the higher character guy."

Well done, Cowboys.

OK, I know this is heresy but did anyone consider he might be innocent? We have no idea what happened and, although Merriman is not someone I consider particularly stable, Tila doesn't come across as stable either. Merriman could be guilty but I think I'll wait for more info before I toss him under the bus.

That said, can you image Merriman trying to survive in the Dallas media atmosphere? The Cowboys chose wisely and Ware should get his money.

Ware needs to teach Merriman how to sing "head, shoulders knees and toes."

I was just on a Chargers board and apparently Merriman had a party last night. what if she was trashed and tried to drive home but he stopped her? there was no signs of abuse on Tila's body according to the police.

Merriman arrested, accused of choking girlfriend Tila Tequila

Associated Press
SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested Sunday and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, as she tried to leave his suburban home.
Tequila, 27, signed a citizen's arrest warrant, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman said.
Deputies responded about 3:45 a.m. to Merriman's house in Poway, north of San Diego, after a woman called to say she was choked by the player and thrown to the ground when she tried to leave, Sheriff's Department spokesman Jan Caldwell said at a news conference.
Merriman, 25, was taken into custody and booked into the central jail at about 8:30 a.m. He was released shortly after 11 a.m. Caldwell said she didn't know if he posted bail or was released on his own recognizance.

Tequila was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, is best known for "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila," which ran for two seasons on MTV. The bisexual dating show featured men and women vying for Tequila's affections. She has also modeled for Playboy and other men's magazines.
Scott E. Leemon, an attorney for Tequila, said in a statement that neither she nor her representatives would comment publicly on the incident.
Merriman's agent, Tom Condon, said he hadn't heard about the arrest when contacted by The Associated Press.
Merriman was the 12th overall pick out of the University of Maryland in the 2005 NFL Draft, and had 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons. The three-time Pro Bowl selection was getting back into shape after missing nearly all of last season following knee surgery.
The Chargers, picked by some as Super Bowl favorites, open the regular season a week from Monday night at Oakland. Players had been off since after Friday night's exhibition finale against San Francisco. They are due back at practice on Monday.
"It's disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in statement. "We'll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course."
Smith didn't return a call seeking further comment.
Smith often speaks of signing "character" players, yet the Chargers have had their share of embarrassing off-field problems in recent seasons.
In 2006, there were seven run-ins with the law by San Diego players, including linebacker Steve Foley's shooting by an off-duty police officer who suspected him of drunken driving.
Merriman was suspended four games for testing positive for steroids in 2006, and linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2008 season after testing positive for a banned stimulant.
Additionally, Smith reportedly has been unhappy with Merriman's extracurricular activities. He has various business ventures and is enamored with the Los Angeles social scene. While on injured reserve last year he flew back and forth to Los Angeles once a week to appear on a football preview show.
