Ever been around an unreasonable and volatile drunk? It's not unheard of for things to turn physical in those cases.

Not saying he's right for allegedly hitting a woman obviously less than half his size. But maybe the fact that she is half his size and was drunk will work in his favor.

ESPN radio was reporting that Tila Tequila Nguyen twittered that she does not drink because she is allergic to alcohol. I heard that on Colin Cowherd's show being hosted by Doug Gottlieb today.

More On The Tila VS. Shawne Merriman Drama


After San Diego Chargers baller Shawne Merriman was arrested this weekend for allegedly assaulting and falsely imprisoning Tila Tequila (Tila Nguyen), his attorneys are speaking out. He was released later that day. Merriman’s attorney denied the allegations, saying more than a dozen other people were at Merriman’s house in suburban San Diego, California, at the time of the incident and “witness after witness after witness will back up his story 100 percent. According to CNN:

Deputies didn’t see any physical injuries on Nguyen, but she asked to be transported to a local hospital, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said. Nguyen’s condition was not immediately known.

Merriman’s attorney, Todd Macaluso, told reporters that Nguyen was “extremely intoxicated and inebriated” and that the player tried to make arrangements for her to leave the house.

“At no time did Mr. Merriman assault her. At no time did Mr. Merriman keep her against her will,” Macaluso said. “His intentions were nothing but good. … We’re very confident that this matter will be resolved without any charges being filed whatsoever.”

Interesting that he says she was drunk since Tila is allergic to alcohol. She posted on Twitter:

Is there such a thing as alcohol allergy? After drinking just one alcoholic beverage, I get a rash all over and I throw up.

Some people are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol than are others. However, this doesn't mean you have an alcohol allergy.
A true food allergy involves your immune system. In such cases, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a component of that food as a harmful substance. Your immune system triggers certain cells to produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight the "enemy" food or food component. Signs and symptoms of food allergy include tingling in the mouth, hives, breathing difficulties, and swelling of your lips, tongue or throat.
An alcohol allergy would be very uncommon. However, you could be allergic to other ingredients in an alcoholic beverage, such as wheat or sulfur dioxide, a preservative. There are also substances in some alcohol beverages such as wine that can cause flushing or even rashes.
Still, it's more likely that you have an alcohol intolerance — which means you are more sensitive to the normal effects of alcohol. Alcohol can cause a variety of immediate adverse effects on the body, including headache, rapid heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, or warm, red, itchy skin.
Many people of Asian descent experience an unusual flushing reaction after drinking alcohol — even in very small amounts. This is caused by a genetic disorder in which the body is unable to break down alcohol completely. Some research suggests that people who experience alcohol flush reaction may be at increased risk of alcohol-related conditions, such as cancer of the esophagus and liver disease.
The only solution to all of these problems is to avoid alcohol.
Rarely, severe pain following alcohol ingestion may be a sign of a more serious underlying disorder, such as Hodgkin's disease — also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma. If you experience unusual symptoms after ingesting alcohol, consult your doctor.

Sorry, no. Maybe if Shawn was having to restrain one of his teammates, or someone of a real threatening size, then I'd completely believe this defense.

That, however, isn't the case here. She's a 90 pound woman whose less than 5 feet tall. There is no way, outside of having a gun that she's any sort of threat to him at all. There is no way anyone can tell me it would have been really hard for him to take the keys without choking her and what not. I don't, and won't, buy that stupid defense for any reason in this particular situation.

The folks over at Global Grind claim a source told them that despite Shawne Merriman’s claims that he was trying to prevent Tila Tequila from driving drunk that dramaful night, it has to be a lie. She did not have a car that night because she was booked for an event on Friday night. The source goes on to tell them that “a car service was provided for Tila by the promoters which refutes Shawne Merriman’s claim that Tila was trying to drive drunk. She did not have a car.”

And here’s Tila’s first official non-Twitter statement from her lawyers:

Shawne Merriman and his advisors have decided that the best defense is a good offense, attacking Tila Tequila in the press with a lot of calculated spin to cover up his illegal and indefensible actions. Fortunately, we as a society will not tolerate a 6′4″, 270 pound all-pro NFL linebacker physically assaulting a young lady who is 4′11″ and 93 pounds. It is never justifiable to brutally assault, choke, strike and imprison a woman. Once the truth is fully revealed, Mr. Merriman’s fantastic story of how he was trying to keep Ms. Tequila safe will be completely discredited. No one, especially a woman, should ever have to endure what Mr. Merriman did to Tila Tequila.
