If he wanted hard ***'s like the Postons up front, then he should of just hired them in the 1st place.

Can you imagine how steamed Parcells would be if we took Merriman and he pulled that?

I thank goodness we either got a tip or got real lucky.

Otherwise we would be in a very bad situation.

San Diego has problems signing just about every one of their 1st round picks. They like to lowball. Throw in the Postons and it could get real ugly.

I'm thinking.......throw OUT the Postons and it could get real DONE.....

"They don't have leverage – not with this organization. Call Jimmy Sexton and ask him and you'll find out. He played games, and everything blew up in his face. He got the double whammy."

As a fan of another team, I applaud A.J. Smith's candor.

But mouthing off like this in the media isn't a good idea if you're a Chargers fan, IMO.

This is why the Chargers have the reputation they have and why signing draft picks is such a chore.

Talk tough all you want in private with the Postons, but not in the media. And calling Jimmy Sexton out and rubbing his nose in it isn't a good idea. What if Smith wants to sign a Sexton client who is a FA next spring? Smith may have the upper hand in signing draft picks, but not when it comes to free agents next March 1. It could come back to haunt him.

He's burning bridges with every boastful, combative comment he makes to the media.

Nobody wants to look like a loser in negotiations. There's a place for diplomacy and giving the "other side" a graceful way to come out of it.

Personally, I like Sexton's approach.

Look, agents don't care if you call them out publicly. They'll call the team out publicly too.

In the end, if the player gets the contract he believes is worthy and if the team gets the player in camp on time, everyone will forget the harsh words.

No kidding. I actually liked Merriman. This stuff since the Draft is nonsense.
I never wavered on taking Ware over Merriman...and I still maintain the posture.

That's "posture"...not "poston"! :D

Good point.

Being an "easy negotiation" is robbing yourself of free publicity.

Well, I confess to not knowing Merriman would hire the Postons after the draft. I'd have been happy to have him if we drafted him. I couldn't be more thrilled that we passed after seeing hsi act so far. I knew nothing about this side of his character.
