CHARLES TAPPER IS NOT PLAYING THIS YEAR. JAYLON SMITH IS NOT PLAYING THIS YEAR.

For goodness sakes, stop asking.
Statements like this are strange.

Either you have inside knowledge of their status--in which case it would be good to share to keep people from speculating--or you have the same info we have--in which case this definitive and angry (all caps) statement is unwarranted and, quite honestly, rude.

I don't understand why people can't take discussion and speculation on a football discussion board. Good grief--what are you here for if not to discuss?

Thanks for sharing the news on Tap.

On a down note, while discussing the lack of attention given to the pass rush last off-season, Mickey Spagnola shook his head and mentioned watching Randy Gregory doing drills out of the practice field. Suspended players are allowed at facilities for meetings and weight lifting, they just can't practice with the team.

Mick said he watched Gregory doing a drill and lamented the wasted talent.

While I haven't given up hope we may get Randy back on the field at some point in the future, the only course of action the team can take is to operate as if he isn't on the roster when they begin making decisions in the off-season.

Gregory is currently serving a 14 game suspension that will end December 19th.

That's when we'll officially hear if a one year suspension for another failed test is implemented.

As a HUGE Husker fan, I always knew what a freak athlete Gregory was from watching him as a freshman. Easily a +10 sack guy. Unfortunately, he'll only see the field again if/when the NFL approves the use of marijuana. What a disappointment but everyone knew the risks when he was selected. Just never realized how weak, mentally, he really was. Sad.

These statements are not strange, didn't you know that more doctors have graduated from the Cowboy Zone than an other medical institute in america.

Hey gymastics is no joke. Those people are as tough as hell. If she could compete with pars defect that makes me feel better about tapper.

He's been out so long l forgot what his injury was.....anyone?
Yep, on IR. You have him, Lael Collins, Kellen Moore and Geoff Swaim. It's going to come down to Collins and Tapper. Collins is a starting quality OL that would be a major insurance policy for an injury along the OL. Tapper is a question mark. Even though we have a need for a pass rusher, do we know enough about Tapper and what he can bring to take him over Collins? And how far away is each, that is a key too.
I thought Tapper hs some kind of chronic back problem? That can not be too good for a long career??

I agree and think this is the only reason Jerry & Co dont write him off completely. The NFL at one point was considering the use of medical marijuana. Once they change the rules Gregory could be back provided the league authorizes his issues health related.

Thought Tapper was a great pick.

Ourlads had him as a 2nd/3rd rounder.

Still don't really understand totally the back issue and if anything can be done about it.

Apparently non-surgical treatment of Pars Defect is movement restriction utilizing a back brace for a few months. The actual injury never really goes away or gets "fixed" so it's something that will have to be managed for his entire career.

The treatment phase should be over by now (unless it didn't work and he ends up needing surgery) but since he's probably been completely restricted from athletic movements since training camp, he'll need to work his back into general fitness and then back into football shape.

Any idea how/why it flared up? Obviously it was never an occurrence in college.

I think this defensive front needs all the help they can get. Sooner Tapper is ready the better off this defense will be.

Here's a tidbit from Clarence Hill.

Gregory update
As the Cowboys head toward the playoffs and continue to search for help for an ailing defense, there remains a question about whether suspended defensive end Randy Gregory can be considered an option for the postseason. Gregory is suspended for the first 14 games of the season, meaning he could return for the final two and possibly the playoffs if he gets re-instated by the NFL.

The issue was a report by the NFL Network last month of another possible failed test by Gregory, putting him the cross hairs of a year-long suspension. Per the Cowboys, they still have heard nothing from the league on Gregory and year-long suspension. He continues to work out at the facility. But they don’t know if he will be an option for the final two games or the postseason. They are not planning on it, but they know nothing for certain, per coach Jason Garrett.

This is just my interpretation after reading up on the issue. It appears that some people (especially young people) with this issue are just too active for it to ever heal. Apparently, some people (generally young) can recover just from minimizing the movement of the back for a few months. This generally involves wearing a brace to limit movement.

I'm not a doctor by any means, but from what I've asked of others who are, it's a chronic-use injury that occurs to a lot of younger athletes. Not unlike getting shin splints or something, except way worse and harder to heal. And some are susceptible to it while others aren't.
