Charlton Heston played a part in a scary and confused part of my youth.
My uncle had taken my siblings and myself to the original theatrical showing of Planet of the Apes. It may have very well been the first movie I had ever seen in a theater. Fun was had by all, that is, until...
Where we lived we could only get 2 channels on our TV. The remote control for my Dad was, well, us kids. Back and forth, chanel 3, channel 5..3...5....3....5.
Naturally, we watched what Dad watched.
Other than the Viet Nam war that dominated the nightly news, I can remember of the trouble also being experienced in Ireland. And then I heard it...I was shocked...amazed...astonished even, that there was
gorilla warfare happening.
How could this be? It was just a movie, or at least I thought, and now the
gorilla army was clashing with the government in Ireland!
"Where's Ireland?" I asked my Dad..."Can the
gorilla army come here?"
"No, we don't have to worry about that here."
Trouble was, my Dad hadn't seen The Planet of the Apes...he didn't know what happened to Charlton Heston like I did.
