Charlton is wasted draft pick

Can we ever give anyone time to develop before we label a player a bust?

Lawrence looked bad the first couple of years. He was injured and not too productive. Byron Jones was also getting the “bust “ label before this year.

Patience is something fans don’t have. Now, he really needs to show strides in his third year. That was always Landry’s philosophy.

I understand waiting to see if he can be a great player but in todays salary cap era you cannot afford to waste time on players. you need players that can play and contribute.

Maybe not wasted yet. Young man needs to get his head straight. We have waited longer than this on other projects that have payed off. He has talent, Garrett just needs to massage the right vibes out him. EaRN YOUR MONEY COACH!

Lawrence was on his contract year when we drafted Taco and many didn’t foresee him returning.

Then he transformed into arguably the best player on our defense.

That is correct. To add Gregory was a complete mystery and bust at the time as well because of his suspensions. So we NEEDED a DE and weren't looking to FA for 1.

So we made the Taco pick as he was the best on the board. Remember when we drafted Tank? We moved up into the 2nd to get him because we NEEDED a DE then. He was the best left on that board. He took 3 years to start showing up be he came up. Marinelli developed him but didn't look away at the pick because he liked Tanks hustle. Marinelli is doing what he has to do with Taco. I am not worried about Taco yet.

This offseason everyone was talking about how he came in built and how good he was looking. So he got into shape, didn't play through injuries and has been in Marinelli's dog house a bit since according to Stephen Jones. It will work out. Our rotation is very good right now. I can only imagine if Irving was good to go with the way Tyrone Crawford has been turning it on.

couldn't agree more. I think folks are spoiled because of LVE. If you are going to be so damn down on the scouting department on Taco, where is the love for them for scouting LVE!!!
DE is one of the harder positions to learn and make an immediate impact which is why it's pretty rare a rookie or second year player will. If we haven't seen much more than what we have by this time next year, the OP may be correct, but it is still too early right now to call this kid a bust.

TJ at combine
6'4"
252 pounds
33"1/3 arms
4.69 40
6.79 3 cone

LVE
6'4"
256
33"7/8 arms
4.65 40
6.88 3 cone

basically the same guy.
OLB in this scheme.
Both had 1 year of actual high level D1 football performance too.
So we are replacing LVE with Tj then?

Why would we show them love for drafting Bobby carpenter 2.0?

i was rewatching the game this morning since I do not have to work today and was watching all of charltons snaps. the guy gets no push whatsoever. I just wonder what was the scouting department thinking when they drafted him. Armstrong needs to be active in playoffs instead of Charlton. the guy cannot stop the run or even get close to qb. I guess you cannot hit every first round pick.

Can't hit on all of them, but we have been drafting much better as of late.

Yes he is. Hopefully he makes a major turnaround. Could've for sure got a player that could be contributing more. Ol, te, wr, lb, de, dt, safety, waterboy something anything
If we had the Waterboy we would be Super Bowl champs every year even with our coaching staff.

ultimately that's what happened.
had we drafted Watt he woulda played LB here on base downs at the least.
3rdf down we rush Jaylon a lot because he's good at it but Watt would likely be even better.

Question is could Watt tackle in the open field the way LVE does?
But what's not in question is are taco charlton and watt playing the same position? because that's an easy no.

As explosive as randy is he has not started a game here yet because he also is not a pure 4-3DE the way Rod sees them.
He's growing into one though 4 years after being drafted.

TJ Watt should have been the pick.
I don't care about the he is not a pure DE argument. He holds up well enough at the point of attack. Also if we just wanted a guy to occupy a blocker i don't think you need to spend a first on that. IMO Taco is a sort of a functional Marcus Spears type player.

We could have used Watt as a situational pass rusher and part time DE and he would have been a huge asset for us. Offense has to account for his presence because he gets to the QB fast and embarrasses LTs.

For the millionth time, our scouts (very good drafters in the last decade) wanted Watt, but Marinelli wanted Taco.

Marinelli got his wish.

So you want TJ Watt at DE’s?
Or are we converting to a 3-4 now?
Or are you taking Watt over Jaylon or LVE?

WTH.
TJ WATT is bigger than randy Gregory. That size argument for a RDE hasnt been relevant since the turn if the century...

Yep. Everything about him screams bust. His body language is terrible. He's immature. He's not overly talented.

If you remember when that pick was made Jerry told Taco that Garrett was campaigning for him. For whatever that's worth. He may have been a Garrett guy.

I find it really hard to believe Watt wouldn't be a better DE than Taco. I think that's a fan cop out excuse to avoid admitting it was a terrible draft pick.

The questions about Watt playing well in a 4-3 scheme inherently have not been answered. He's in a good place.

The questions about Taco playing well are not encouraging, but let's be real... we do this EVERY season with one or more of our draftees... Byron this time last year was getting similar treatment by fans predisposed to making ultimate judgments.

I'm giving Taco 2019 before I'm going to go there.

And I need to correct myself... Broaddus, fwiw, said Taco played very well yesterday.
