I don't think giving Romo more than a two year extension is smart.I feel the cowboys should give the raiders a 4th round pick for Tyrelle Pryor and let him mature for two years and go from there.. what do you think about the cowboys and pryor? the length of romo's contract?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:10 PM)

why do you think he'll sign anything less than a 5- or 6-year deal. You're talking as thought he Cowboys have leverage. They have none

Randall (Shreveport)

How did the cowboys resign sims with so little cap room?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:11 PM)

he didn't cost that much, plus the salary cap is a fluid number. It's seemingly always changing

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Is there something about Doug Free that we didn't see? I'm pretty sure just like the rest of us you're wondering how and why he's still on the team after two consecutive years where he was awful.
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:14 PM)

What's the rush? You should never make an emotional decision. What if Jermey Parnell was hurt in an OTA and a minicamp? then you'd be begging for Free. What if they don't take a tackle in the draft? You need more than 2 tackles. Maybe, they'll tell him to take a paycut. Maybe, they'll release him after the draft. I wouldn't obsess over Free. Something will happen

Trent (Austin, TX)

Shouldn't we as fans be happy about the lack of signings in this offseason? At some point we have to get our financial situation in order and stop spending money on guys that don't pan out (Hamlin, Sensabaugh, Free, etc)
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:14 PM)

No. Your team is not getting better.

KB BFFL (theaters near you)

JJT personally i think we should trade Spencer for a pick or two if so could we get a 1 or early #2 pick for him? thoughts?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:15 PM)

who is going to give u that? and then sing him to a long-term lucrative deal?

KB BFFL (theaters near you)

Stephen jones said we already have our two safeties in two unproven hurt players n matt johnson and church it would seem extremely baffling to not see the boys' go for michael huff in FA or pick up a safety in the draft
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:17 PM)

They've passed on Michael Huff before. I wouldn't believe anything anyone named Jones had to say on the record between now and the draft

Rick (TX)

No question here, but I couldn't agree more with your take on athletes getting what they can get while they can get it. Look at Brady. He restructures his deal only to have Welker walk. Who's to say that wouldn't happen if Romo took less. A player's job is to play, not manage the team's cap situation. All the leverage Romo has could have been diminished had the cowboys drafted a QB worth anything like green bay did with rodgers.
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:19 PM)

Once you give the team the money, u have no control over what they do with it, including sticking it back in their pocket

Shawn (Brooklyn NY)

Why are the cowboys signing Spencer longterm if he's unproven at that new defensive end position?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:24 PM)

I don't know that they're doing that just yet. They've been talking for awhile with no deal. Personally, I don't think they're going to get a long-term deal done with Spencer. Of course, I've been wrong before.

James (Georgia)

are you surprise there's been no suitors on the cowboys two 2008 1st round picks?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:25 PM)

nope. They're 3rd tier dudes. They're backups - not even starters. but they'll get done sooner or later

barry (tx)

How committed are the cowboys to Barry church and Matt johnson at safety?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:27 PM)

Guess we'll find out at the draft

Sean (Cali)

What did you think of Marcus Spears as a Player and whom would you have taken witht that 20th pick in 2005?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:28 PM)

Spears was a solid player. No more, no less. He played here 7 years, primarily as a starter. You would always like more, but I can live with it without complaint

Carlos (el paso)

DO you agree with dez: WE NEED ED REED!?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:29 PM)

Nope. That's a move u make when you're one player away. The Cowboys are a lot of players away

John (Flagstaff)

Will the Cowboys finally be active in free agency once they get romo done?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:29 PM)

just for role players. No studs

Andrew (Dallas) [via mobile]

What do you think the terms of Tony Romo's new contract will be?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:32 PM)

I'd guess 6 years, $102 million with $40 guaranteed

perry (Austin)

Do you think Jay Ratliff can still bring something to this defense adn should the cowboys draft his replacement this year?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:32 PM)

yes. yes.

Mike (Tampa)

Who will be the Starting right tackle next year
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:33 PM)

Jermey Parnell

Steph (MD)

Do you think the cowboys issues on the line is the guards or the tackle position?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:33 PM)

right side. Guard and Tackle.

Ian (Atl, GA)

With the DE market being much lower than expected, wouldn't it hurt the Cowboys chances to get Spencer to sign an extension and hence to take less than 10.6 million this seson. Seems like Spencer would just keep the big one year pay day and re-enter FA next season with a better chance of getting more money than Avril and Bennett received this offseason. This is also why I think those guys only took short deals. Thoughts???
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:35 PM)

Yep. That's why I don't think a deal is gonna get done. Spencer, like any player, thinks he can get more money on open market. He'll be a FA next season unless the Cowboys wanna give him a 144 percent raise. He'll probably bide his time for another year and then try to get paid

Darren (Nyc)

Jerry jones said that Costa would be good if he had some good guards around him. If thats the case why keep him?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:36 PM)

that's a question I've had a problem with. I'd like an answer to that down the road

dean (cali)

If you look at some of the deals for some of these defensive players in the free agent market. do you think the cowboys could of been a player with all these guys taking 1 year deals
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:38 PM)

yea, but I personally hate hypotheticals. You just never know how things will work out. Sure, they could've been a player but we'll never know

Rich (San Antonio)

Why is Romo's extension taking so long? Is there any buzz whatsoever on what the holdup is? Wouldn't mind Matt Slauson and Dwan Landry coming to compete for jobs in our weak areas and then wait for the draft!
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:38 PM)

Tony wants one number and the Cowboys want him to accept another

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings JJT ? Thanks for hosting today?s chat. Do you think not having any money to spend in free agency is actually a good thing for Jerry Jones right now, given the way the Cowboys tend to overpay for mediocre players?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:42 PM)

nope. I'm not talking about you, but that's just a dumb premise. Every move the Cowboys have made has not been bad.

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, am I right? the boys will end up with a ton of dead money because the the Tony Romo deal? lots of dead money?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:47 PM)

I don't necessarily think so. He can play 5 years without much of an issue

Dean Rosetti (Olyphant pa)

Why sign Laurant Robinson, it will hurt the progress of Harris and Beasley. I like the youth movement and lack of free agent pickups. Your thought?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:46 PM)

Laurent is only 27. And we've seen what he can do in Dallas. That said, he had several concussions last year. No idea if he's ever gonna be healthy enough to play

Joe (Pa)

why is Romo's extension taking so long? Is there any buzz whatsoever on what the holdup is? Wouldn't mind Matt Slauson and Dwan Landry coming to compete for jobs in our weak areas!
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:49 PM)

It's a negotiation. Romo has all of the leverage. He ain't signing until he gets a deal he wants

James (Ft Worth)

Confused regarding the switch to the 4-3. Are Ware and Spencer the "new" DE's or are they the outside LB's? Thanks.
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:49 PM)

defensive ends

G-Man (England)

How much influence does Garrett have over the draft? Does Jerry have the final say?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:50 PM)

Quite a bit. The Cowboys like to make collective decisions. If there's a tie, JJ does have final say

Joe (Pa)

Do you think Dallas would make a play for Andre Smith or Vollmer for RT if they can get Romo's deal done soon?
Jean-Jacques Taylor(1:57 PM)

nope. They're only getting role players this year

I disagree about Jenkins being a backup, not starting quality.

I think he is definitely a starting caliber CB. It's not very common for "backup" cb's to make a probowl.

ironic, considering he made the Pro Bowl as a "back-up" after Antoine Winfield decided not to play

I don't think giving Romo more than a two year extension is smart.I feel the cowboys should give the raiders a 4th round pick for Tyrelle Pryor and let him mature for two years and go from there.. what do you think about the cowboys and pryor?

Pryor? Sigh, what an idiot. :bang2:

lol touche.

Still my point is he has talent, he is definitely able to start in this league. He just needs a fresh start.

I agree, I don't think he's as bad as he's made out to be, his play would be easier to stomach if he hadn't been a #1 pick, shame to see we're losing both #1's from that year (IIRC)

Wouldn't cutting Free save us 7 million against the cap? Why can't we give that money to Andre Smith or Vollmer? It makes too much sense.

Because it wouldn't be 7 million until June 2 for starters.

"I think where many people get confused, though, is when they hear that “player x” could be designated a June 1 cut and immediately jump to conclusions that it means a spending spree in March. The league allows each team to designate up to two players per year as a June 1 cut for cap purposes prior to June 1."

If Jerry gives Romo a $100 million dollar contract, half this board may be on suicide watch.

Where you are confused is that when you make a player a June 1 designation you don't get the cap relief until June 2. See Marcus Spears and his 1.7 million cap relief.

17 million a year avg. would actually be a lot lower than some nfl people have predicted and also lower than Flaccos per year average.

If only we had a crystal ball that told us which guys won't pan out. Hamlin was coming off a probowl season and Free was considered a top young LT, Sensabaugh was relatively cheap.

Actually I think that 17 mil/year would be pretty good for both parties.

I don't know why people would be shocked that Tony gets $100 mil. He's going to get it somewhere.

I would be fine with him getting it "Somewhere", just not here.

After two or three years of that contract, the other half will join what's left.
