I think I've seen this team get nailed with more illegal picks and chop blocks than the previous 5 seasons combined.

Who else is sick of it? :banghead:

The picks are irritating but the chop blocks are hard it depends, it looked like the last one was Kosier's fault not jones, Jones went for the chop before Kosier engaged the DL.

I just started a thread about the picks, but it disappeared. Weird. I don't get why we still run that pick route. We get flagged for it just about every single time.

Fitzsgerald just got away with a pick play on the pass to the TE a few plays ago. Everyone does it, you just get caught.

Crayton blocked the DB, a natural pick is a allowed where the DBs run into each other but you can't go out into routes and block before the reciver has the ball.

I'm not sure which assistant coach is responsible for teaching the RBs which blocks are legal & which ones are not, (you would think it would be the RB coach). Whoever it is, they are doing a very poor job of teaching it to one Julius Jones. He was just called for an illegal chop block in the third quarter of the Cardinals game. That makes at least 3 such penalties that I know of that Jones has been called for. One of two things are obviously happening:
  1. The coach mumbles, & Jones is just not picking up the words coming out of his mouth.
  2. Jones is as dumb as a stump, and someone needs to whack him in the head with a twoXfour & then explain the rule again.
Come on, JJ, it can't be THAT freaking difficult!! When an offensive lineman is engaged in a block with an opposing player, don't hit such opposing player below the waist. Doesn't that make sense, Julius? Would you want someone to hit you in the knees while you are fighting off the block of a 330 lb. OL?? How could you protect yourself from the idiot that is trying to take away your career? You can't. That's why they have the rule.

When you do it once, even twice, I can understand. However, when an RB is in his third year in the league, and has been constantly called for the same 15 yd. personal foul, it's time he starts paying attention. No wonder you're not in the game much on 3rd & long plays. You can't learn something as simple as not blocking someone below the waist while they are busy getting hit high. You either have a learning deficiency, or you don't give a rip. Either way, you don't belong in there during passing plays.

I personally thought it was a bad call just like last week. The guy was not engaged at all.

IMO, that was on the OL, cause JJ saw him coming in, and stepped up to take him out, then the ol came up from behind, and thats what caused the refs to make the call. Not JJ's fault.

The one last week was iffy, as JJ went low as Flo was letting him go. Dont knock wat aint wrong

Maybe you should try paying attention. First of all, today was the first time Julius has been flagged for a chop block, and on that play, he was the first one to engage the pass-rusher. The lineman hit him AFTER Julius did. What Julius did was perfectly legal until the lineman blocked the same guy.

Last week, Barber was called for a chop block, not Julius. And two weeks ago, Gurode was called for it. That one involved Julius, but all he did was run a play fake into the line and fall down. Gurode was getting pushed backward, and his guy ran into Julius.

So there's never been a situation that you described.

I've always felt that NFL officials tend to pick on certain players and teams...especially, when media folks start to make a big deal out of the penalties.

You see it most often with DBs. I know that once a DB gets a reputation with PIs, they call them all the time.....even if there's good coverage. How many times did "Pup" get flagged, even when he had great coverage?

Deion had the rep as a fantastic cover corner...maybe the best ever. But I swear he got away with more crap than any other CB in the NFL. I'll never forget the 94' NFC Championship game when he raped Irvin....no call.

I think once the rep is there that a team is penalty prone....the refs begin to look more carefully at said team.

How often do you see GBay flagged? or Philly? Those teams have good reps, so they get the benefit of the doubt.

That's not whining...that's just the way it is.

I'd be interested in your opinion of the recent spate of "chop block" calls.

From my understanding of how the rule is written, Jones block this week was perfectly legal. I'm of the understanding that a "chop block" is hitting an engaged player low. The defender was not engaged when Jones hit him so even if Kosier took him high after the fact, that's still legal.

Am I wrong?

Most of those calls this season have been ticky tack at best.

That "pick" on Crayton was a horrible call, as was the "chop block" call on JuJo.

The pick on Crayton was textbook and should have been called. The problem is that it often isn't called.

I have no problem with that call if it was a consistent call across the league. Cooley ran an even more obvious "pick" on a Betts third down conversion last week and the officials simply watched it occur.
