OPINION: Canty will be starting, but he needs to improve his play. He is good vs the run, but doesn't do much in the ways of taking up double teams often (although I will say he is better than Spears at this point) Both need to step that up. He also needs to be more of a presence getting to the QB. What I mean by this is be able to push the O Line back into the pocket more so Ware can get an easier break about the edge, not that Canty needs more sacs, cause 3-4 DE don't need to be able to get sacs, but a little more forceful pressure would help.

I think he'll contribute more this year because he knows Hatcher will be applying serious pressure on him to push for more playing time...

That's one of the most athletic plays I ever remember watching a LB make.

I still can't believe Ware had the reflexes to go up and snatch that pass.

There were many plays where both Canty and Spears were applying pressure on the QB. From a read and react type of defense anybody would be a step or 2 from getting the sack.

I would say let Spears and Canty play this year out and see from there....

I think Canty may be better than spears..people forget Canty was going to be a 1st round pick but he was injury-prone. I think the defensive line is going to be very important to the teams success regardless of how the lb's starting rotation forms up. Those three guys are going to need to create pressure up front, no doubt.

I think the with the slanting in the one gap scheme and stunting that they all should get more push in the pocket.

Stunting is dangerous for the defense because the qb could recognize it and net a big play,but it is so much fun to watch because it creates mass confusion for the qb if done right.

I think we are fine up front. Canty and Spears are the same player to me. Hatcher is the one I expect to shine.

Canty WAS NOT injury prone. He had that eye injury that worried a lot of teams.

I think both Spears and Canty will be just fine in the new scheme. With this Gap 1 Slant we will see the two guys that we thought we drafted. I have been watching Canty since he was in UVA and trust me, he can get to the QB. As for Hatcher, I am not concern about the looking over the shoulder part, I'm just happy for good competition for the starting job and also whoever comes of the bench we know that it will not be a decrease or let down in talent. That is a delima I know every coach would dream to have. I think our DL will be just fine, starters and back ups alike.

I actually think the new penetrating, slanting, one-gap defense will keep CAnty on the bency more than last year. He's a huge, double-butt guy who could hold his spot like Parcells wanted, probably better than Spears, but I don't think he has the athleticism to do what Wade wants.

I think Spears, Hatcher, Ratliff, Bowen, and maybe even Ellis will actually be better in this particular defense than Ferguson or Canty...just my guess...they may be used more in short yardage situations.
