Gotta admit I was surprised that Covington was kept as a 7th LB rather then trying to get him to the PS. I'm guessing they see him on the active 45 and playing special teams.

But something about him I really like as a developmental player learning under Sean Lee, who is probably the best defensive player/coach in the NFL. To play with Sean Lee is a gift to any LBer, especially one who started college football as a QB.

But the thing about Covington is he looks the part. I was actually at a bar when they played their last pre-season game. I was recording it at home and trying not to watch so as not to piss the wife off. I stopped and looked up and saw a LBer making a play and thought "who is that?! I like his fire, the way he moves, he looks like a stud." It was Covington. Go ahead and make fun for my uninformed analysis, but I've got a hunch he might surprise all of us. They're obviously looking a year or two down the road with him. In the meantime, I predict some highlight reel hits from him on special teams.

I was surprised by this too.

He must be good on special teams.

FISH - Cowboys 1st & 10: Garrett's security (blankets) in final 53-man

8) I saw somebody suggest that Dallas kept a lot of linebackers on the 53-man because "linebackers are an important part of today's game,'' or somesuch. But the simple reason the Cowboys have ... on this roster right now (besides the fact that is seems like a pretty good idea to have the established Sean Lee and the emerging Jaylon Smith around) is because the personnel department loves, and therefore fought for, Chris Covington. Covington, the sixth-round rookie, was your wild card here, the reason you went thin elsewhere.

Thanks. That's a great find. But who the heck is "the personnel department"???

McClay really liked this guy. Maybe we kept him because he played QB in high school....

This really says it all. They fall in love with players and draft them too high and keep them on the roster after they don’t do anything to earn it. Meanwhile a player like Lenoir busted his tail all offseason and showed he can be a legitimate NFL WR. Forget the punt return stuff. He would never be a PR and was only there so Austin or Beasley didn’t get hurt. Lenoir showed the work ethic and improvement that should be what defines RKG. Not keeping the best 53 you can is not a recipe to winning in th NFL. Lenoir earned a spot over Covington, Brown, and a few others.

he lost his spot in the Az game.

Covington was drafted to play special teams. He'll likely never be anything more than a special teams player, so he better excel there.

Let’s see if Lenoir actually gets picked up. We tend to overvalue our FA’s and the rueing is often immaterial.

It seems you saw more from Lenior than anyone else did.

For what? Being thrust into the PR role that doesn’t suit him in order to keep Austin and Beasley from getting hurt? His value to a NFL team is at WR. He proved he is a capable WR right now and his work ethic points to even more improvement in the future. Those are the types of players I want on the team.

Did we cut March-lillard ? I am not happy if we did. He had a solid camp.

I saw nice routes and catches including a toe tapping TD. I also saw practice recaps with his name all over them. I saw offseason workout reports with him putting in the hard work with Dak. I could care less about fumbling a punt in preseason. He isn’t and never will be a punt returner but he has a chance to be a solid rotational WR.
