Christian McCafferry Sitting there at 32

If they have him rated as 1st rounder then yes.

We need someone to take over that Lucky Whitehead spot. Trick play/returner/ etc.

A Tyreek Hill without the baggage. Lucky just doesn't have that extra gear needed.

McCaffery would be a third-down back and/or slot receiver. We have Zeke and Beasley. We are good.

But they don't use Zeke on very many 3rd down passing situations.

You would be replacing Dunbar and or Whitehead.

Of course Defense is the priority at this moment. But it was also a priority when we took Zeke.

I love the broad, blind BPA stance so many cling to here. It obviously shows you both A: don't understand how BPA actually works and B: don't understand that absolutely no team in football blindly takes the BPA.

To answer the OP, I would be irate. If you use him enough to ever justify the pick, you waste Zeke. If you don't use him enough to justify it, you've wasted that pick.

They should.

I think McCaffery is more in the Beasley mode than Whitehead.

It is. It was last as well year, but their calculated gamble that Elliott improves the defense paid off. Although we might have a need at WR (#2) or TE (Witten's eventual replacement), they really need to address the defense. No character (Gregory) or injury (Smith) gambles either. The guy who best helps the defense.

What they didn't count on is a 4th round QB taking over and having the success Dak has. His cap hits the next three years are $635,848, $725,848, and $815,848. Throw in what Romo saves us once off the books (especially in 2018), and if we do not go out and spend wisely in free agency to upgrade the defense, we simply aren't paying attention.

I can easily see him being a pro bowler in New England despite them having Edleman and Amendola. I'd take McCaffery or OJ Howard and figure out the defense later.

Hopefully they learned their lesson with Felix Jones. You don't take a specialty back in the 1st round.

McCaffery is so much better than Felix Jones that there is no lesson to be learned there.

Felix had a career high 154 carries as a sophomore, and also only 15 catches (16 was his college career high). He projected to be a good receiver, but wasn't really used as one in college.

McCaffery on the other hand had 337 carries as a sophomore and 45 catches as well. As a Junior, he had 253 carries and 37 catches. Not to mention he has value as a punt returner. I'd easily take him in that 29-32 range.

I just don't see this happening.

That late in 1st round (basically the 2nd round) the tiers of essentially equally rated players gets wider.
They would take a player in the same tier group but where we had a greater need.

BPA is not an absolute thing at all. Players are usually in general groupings. That's where need (and common sense) comes into play.

Yes there is. He's not going to get the touches to justify the high pick.

Then that says more about our offensive coaches than it does the player/pick. The touches will be there, Alfred Morris, Lance Dunbar, Darren McFadden and Lucky Whitehead have 98 offensive touches right now, add to that the 23 or so punt returns and 15 kick returns and that could easily be worth a late first rounder.
