Mr. Ciskowski speaks:

"You never know how a kid is going to respond when he makes the amount of money that they make in the NFL.

Are they going to think they've arrived and forgot about how they got there? The hard work, and all the dedication?

There's 27 weeks of football for a rookie. That's two college seasons.

It's really more mental, when they've got to have the mental toughness and love football.

So it becomes a little bit of a grind. ... Well, if you don't love the game, you'll miss an assignment maybe on special teams, or the offensive lineman is not tuned in ..

So you've really got to stay glued in and love football, or you'll lose your edge ..

There's one thing that I think we do weigh heavily on, and that's how he plays football ...

You still have to take that into account, because it's played on the field. It's not played in shorts, in a workout, or anything like that.

I think every team needs good players. But we have our 22 right now. And most every kid that we draft is probably going to start out as a backup. And then see if he can earn his way into becoming a starter.

I just think at the end of the day when we look back at this draft three years from now, if we drafted good players, and we've got a few veterans, we'll look and see that what we drafted were the right guys ...

Because "he" initially started as a backup, and then so-and-so retired or moved on, and this guy flipped right in and replaced him.

We don't have to get cute and tricky, we can just take the best player (in this draft). Regardless."

(Yo I transcribed this from "The Blitz"/"Cowboys Draft Show" last night on CBS 11)..

Thanks for posting that!

I have faith in Ciskowski and I love the idea of only bringing in guys who truly love the game. It's also great to hear that our scouting team doesn't over value workout numbers and combine times (Al Davis, take note) and that, instead, we concentrate on how they play the game.

Good stuff! I really look forward to seeing these young guys in camp and in preseason.

This draft was horrible, thanks to Jerry Jones' meddling. On the other hand, this draft was masterful, thanks to Ciskowski's scouting expertise.

[So do I have this message-board pegged with that comment abve? :laugh2:]

It's too bad we didn't have Ciskowski here since 1994. I like the way this guy thinks.

Ciskowski has been involved in the scouting process in Dallas since 1992 in some capacity or another.

And Ciskowski's explanation is why the Cowboys didn't pick guys like Duke Robinson and Michael Johnson (who seem to be the "Poster Children" of who the Cowboys should have picked according to the folks whining about the Cowboy's draft), who were taking plays off at the college level.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to Zimmer talk about Johnson, do so. It is amusing to say the least.

This is one attitude trait that I think all of our draft choices have in common.

“This kid is a tremendous, tremendous athlete. He doesn’t play hard all the time. That’s our job to make sure that he does that. But he is a tremendous athlete. Like I told the guys up in the draft room, when we talk about this kid and you watch him on tape, there are some plays that you say ‘Oh wow, I can’t believe he did that.’ Then some of the other plays, you say, ‘Oh heck, he didn’t do very good there.’ But he does have a little bit of a wow factor in some of his measurables and some of his plays on tape. He just doesn’t have it enough. Hopefully by the end of the rookie minicamp, we’ll have that straightened out.”

This is the man who we had in charge of our defense for years. Chilling. I still remember his sterling projection about other players getting their "swagger back".

And to think, some Bengals fans are actually dancing in the streets thinking he's the reason they had a "great" draft. They took some names, but did not get a lot of players that are consistent or motivated.

Yep, "chilling" is the word for it.

This is just the type of player that ruins drafts, breaks hearts and gets coaches fired.

Johnson may turn out to be good, but this profile is one that we've seen before. It's pure folly that these coaches believe they can "light a fire" under anyone.

It's a mistake that's made over and over again.

I agree wholeheartedly about Zimmer. His talent evaluation skills were even worse than his coaching/play calling, I remember him falling in love w/several busts like Phillip Buchanon, Dwayne Goodrich & Kareem Lattimore. I remember vets coming into camp and complaining that he was more interested in technique than in playmaking. That said, the Bengals got more than just "names", they got names at great value. Maualuga in the 2nd and Johnson in the 3rd were not reaches at all, they definitely improved that abyssmal defense w/ a couple of playmakers.

I did not appreciate that comment. I would say about seven players should be completely content, not 22.

Even without Johnson, the Bengals did a decent job this year in the draft.
