Classic TV Haters Vandalize Andy Griffith Statue
Posted Feb 25th 2010 11:02AM by Bob Sassone

I don't understand why anyone would want to vandalize any statue, but a statue of Andy Taylor and his son Opie? That's just madness! But that's what happened to the statue that TV Land put in Mt. Airy, NC, with green and red paint. Here's the video from a local news report. TV Land also has statues of Mary Richards in Minneapolis, Bob Hartley in Chicago, Ralph Kramden in New York, Elvis in Hawaii, The Fonz in Milwaukee, and Samantha Stevens in Salem.

I give TV Land a lot of grief for their programming decisions, but I'm impressed they're actually flying someone to NC to repair the statue.

Ernest T. Bass & Lamar Tuttle are inconsolable!!

I lived in Mt. Airy, NC for a few months. That was in the 1980's and before that statue. They have a regular celebration there to honor the TV Show called Mayberry Days. For a period of time Andy was at odds with the town and would not come to the celebrations, but they buried the hatchet on that some time back and he does attend.

Mayberry is based on Mt. Airy, where Andy was born. Mt. Pilot is based on the real town Pilot Mountain.

Vandals are jerks.

I heard about this last night on an Andy Griffith forum.

I love the Andy Griffith show. I have the complete Andy Griffith Series on Dvd. It has all 8 seasons and all 249 Episodes and all but I think 2 Episodes are uncut. When you watch Andy Griffith on tv they have to cut out some parts since commercials are longer these days. It's nice to be able to watch any Andy Griffith show whenever I want and to see the Episodes uncut.

The country's finest detectives are on the case!

This really pisses me off.

Like Cowpoke, TVLand's programming has gone down the tubes recently, but I'm glad they're stepping in.

On a lighter note, Ernest T. Bass would be the leading suspect.

Anyone who defaces the Dr. Bob Hartley statue will have to answer to me.

I'm thinking it was Otis who's probably still bitter about all the times Andy threw him in jail for being drunk.

I used to love watching reruns of this show with my dad when I was younger.

I hate to admit it but I use to like the Brady Bunch until I saw the episode with Bobby Brady mowing the families astroturf lawn. I lost all respect for the show after that. :(

Yea, because the part about 6 kids, sharing a total of TWO bedrooms, while a live-in housekeeper rattles around downstairs in her own private suite, was über realistic!

Another show I use watch was Gilligans Island. I could never figure out how the Skipper stayed fat all those years as a castaway on a deserted island. Another puzzling thing about that show was the professor. He was so smart he could make radio transmitters inside coconuts and even built a satellite dish out of bamboo broadcasting the castaways all over the world in an attempt to get them rescued but he never once thought about fixing the hole in their boat. It was odd how people could get on the island but the castaways could never get off. It seemed like every episode someone would come stumbling into their camp holding a suitcase. The castaways would take them in and feed them. The guy would tell them rescuers are on their way and the next day they would see the guy hovering over the island in a helicopter waving goodbye and thanking them for their hospitality. LOL Even the Harlem Globtrotters found their way onto the island.
