Clay Mathews on how to stop read option: "Hit the QB"

Scrambling, running, passing, whatever. He destroyed his knee and it will never be the same again.

I don't know that, Dr Andrews the best there is in sports medican is very impressed with how RGIII has come back and still has his speed and ability to move and cut. Look I hate the Commanders as much as anyone but I'm not going to take simple facts and spin them into some anti RGIII/Commanders rant. How he got hurt it is relavent from the stand point you make it out as if he was hurt running the option and he didn't.

I hate the Deadskins so I rant against them. They'd be better off making him a drop back passer because running their current offense is going to end his career. It almost did last year. He was hurt several times.

Every QB runs the risk of getting hurt. Hell Romo has had busted ribs 2 years in a row, broken colar bone. The pistol is not going to cause his injury hell Denver with Peyton is using the formation, it is a formation if defense is giving him a big opening then run I would say the same for Romo if there is nothing but daylight in front of you then take it but get out of bounds or slide that is what hurt RGIII, trying to jump a DB, trying to tight rope down the sideline instead of getting out of bounds so yes if he runs like that then he is going to see his career come to a quick end but he can still use his ability to run if he does take what is there and then protect himself like any other QB

Come on man! Payton's not going to be running the ball at all. RGknee is an option to run anytime and not just from the RO.

What's your take on Mathews being told by the refs that as soon as he fakes, he's not a QB anymore and that his team will hit him every chance they can?

What I am saying the pistol does not mean the QB has to run there are option open to him and yes run is one of them. My take on Mathews comments is if he fakes the pitch and has the ball he is a runner and can be hit but that is nothing new. Now if he pitches it well ahead of time and no longer has the ball then no you can't just blast him

His point is that at least his team will start to imploy this philosophy. I'm sure others will also. This part is what's new.

I will say this, the offense that Shanahan ran in Denver is not exactly the same offense he is running with RGIII in Washington. I would also add that I don't believe Shanahan will continue to run that offense with so much emphasis on RGIII keeping the ball and running with it or rolling out and exposing his body to the hits. I think we will see that offense get back to something that more closely resembles what Shanahan ran in Denver. Basically, I don't expect to see the pistol in Washington as time goes by. I think they installed it because RGIII had experience in it and it was something that they might be able to win with in RGIII's first season. I think Shanahan is smarter then that. I think he understands that he can not allow his QB, no matter what offense they run, to take that much punishment. I think they will change things over time.

Overlooking the vast differences between the Wildcat and the R/O, the read option was a million times more effective and successful than the Wildcat could ever have hoped for.

Why is the standard response always "So was the Wildcat"? lol...Kinda like the standard response to RG3's incredible season was "Cam Newton was incredible, too."...So very little thought is required to give that as a retort.

The read option is a gimmick offense used by the Commanders that helped them go 10-6. The 2009 (?) Dolphins used the Wildcat gimmick offense that helped them go..... 10-6.

Sounds like the same amount of success to me.

Big difference between pistol and wildcat. I guess WCO is a gimmick as well?

They talked about this earlier on NFL radio. Teams are going to hit the QB every chance they get. The QB is protected when he is passing the ball, not as a runner. So as long as he is not dropping back to pass, he is fair game. It doesn't affect your typical dropback QB because he hands the ball off, unless he is bootlegging.

They said that defensive coordinators have been studying this all off season and are ready for it.

QB has never been protected when he is a runner, only time he is protected when running the ball is if he slides feet first or of course he runs out of bounds. Outside of that the league has never protected a QB who is running the ball. My arguement is if he pitches the ball and is standing there well after the ball has been pitched then no you can't hit him. But sure on a bang bang play where he is in the process of pitching it then sure you can hit him.

Is that really the depth of your analysis? lol...

I agree that Shanahan will cut down on the amount of read option calls (I think he himself even said that). The pistol, however, will not be reduced right along with it. There's zero reason for him to do so.

Kinda like the standard response to RGknees knee injury is "it wasn't that bad".

I've never heard anyone, anywhere, say his injury "wasn't that bad".

What I have heard/read is that his injury wasn't the devastating shredding of ligaments that will end up shortening his career to, oh, say 2 years at best lol ;)

Yes, 2 years or less if he keeps running the offense they ran last year. Concussion, knee injury or something else will end it for him.

Actually, there is every reason for him to do it. The Pistol is not what Shanahan ran in Denver. There are similarities but I don't see it. I see Shanahan going away from that offense and moving towards his offense, of which, he knows and has much, much more experience with.

Vs Seahawks lineing up in the short gun is not running the pistol per say maybe you should learn what it is before making lame comments.

But the pistol is run the shot-gun, so maybe you can kindly explain what else it was, especially when they were running out of it like they did all season long, including the QB RG3 running...

The fact is he was running in the Dallas game and RG3 was 're-injured' after the first two series in the Seattle game, which is why I referred to those first two series, meaning your claim that they didn't go pistol is just absurd. The fact is, even the next two series after RG3 allegedly got hurt, he was bounding around and they were still running the same formations from shot-gun.

1) Did he say the Skins never ran the read option against the Cowboys? No.

2) Are you one of those who believes every play run out of the pistol formation is a read option play? lol

How about let us go to what he said:

RGIII was hurt, he was hurt during the Dallas game as well. Stopping the skins that day had nothing to do with the pistol formation because Washington did not run much out of the pistol as they had before because RGIII was hurt.

Kindly repost what you wrote or maybe don't...

Maybe you need to read up on what the pistol is. Evidently no clue.

So why were they running so much out of shotgun if they abandoned the pistol formation? It's obvious you just spewing forth anecdotal claims that have no basis. RG3 was running against Dallas, despite and injury and he was against Seattle, out of the "shotgun".
