Clayton: The best play in NFL free agency is to be in position to pass

This article would make me feel better if we were one of the teams who were in that "position to pass", but we aren't.

We don't have enough talent on this roster to sit back and see how free agency pans out.

If we want to win, we need more talent. Sitting back and doing nothing will keep us drowning in mediocrity.

If your top 5 and top 5 WR are out for most of the season.. Yes.

If this roster was as good as you think, they would have won a game or two without those guys.

Problem is people overrate our roster, hanging onto 2014 as if that's the standard when in reality this team was probably more .500 than anything else.

They didn't pass.

The resigned one of their own for a position of need.

And they greatly strengthened the weakest spot on their defense for the past 3 years.

the cowboys don't have enough talent to pass but they don't have the cap space to engage in the top of free agency. its really about the money or the lack of it for dallas.

Cowboys aren't in a position to pass. They just have too many positions to upgrade and not enough money.

There's no question that free agency has helped really good teams in recent years, but the best teams consistently manage to pick their spots after drafting well, developing talent, and spending the bulk of their money on making sure their best players never actually reach free agency.
I think this is what the Cowboys are working towards.

I think this is what the Cowboys are working towards.

And that might be the case but let's also point out the owner/GM is still talking about winning now and how they have this window with Romo and can't use a 4th pick on a future QB, which probably would be the wisest long term decision they could make.

In a way, the Cowboys are kind of stuck............. they want to look to the future, clean up their cap more, etc............. but they are tied a 36 year old QB with a serious injury history now who the owner is desperate to try to get him a SB in the next 3 years or so.

IMO and based on how last season played out, if a legit QB (whether the air apparent and/or backup) is not added to this roster, this offseason was a failure. You can have blue chip players at every other position on the field but ultimately the team will be inept w/o someone of good caliber behind center.
