I think Clint has as many good lines as any actor ever and I think he pulled them off as only he can .
"Go ahead , make my day ."
" Buzzards gotta eat , same as worms ."
And many more . He owned these lines .

So many of them:

"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."

"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

Eastwood hand down. Way more versatile actor.

Wayne had some good movies, but not on the level Eastwood did.

Tough one.

I think they're both great.

But they're totally different actors and usually portrayed characters that were far different. Even if they were both "good" or "bad" they gave spins to their characters that were far removed from each other.

I couldn't imagine John Wayne playing a Clint Eastwood part or visa versa. They're far too different.

I appreciate the many hours of entertainment both of them have given me over the years.

Clint is the better actor overall; but John Wayne will always be my favorite; and he could do all rolls as well. Try the Searchers if you do not believe it; have always thought it and the Shootist were his best rolls.

One of friends met Clint on Ted Turner's ranch in New Mexico . He said that Clint is really a nice guy , but he was shocked to see that Clint looks so frail in person . This was just a couple of years after he had made Unforgiven . My friend said that he is so much different than the " tough guy" that he plays .

I think Wayne loses points with some folks because he played roles that many times done in an "over-the-top" way. And I think that just rubs some the wrong way. I also think that's why Wayne wasn't big with the academy award folks. He got the one for "True Grit" near the end of his career, but in truth it had been the same type of character he had been playing for decades.

We watched "The Quiet Man" in high school, because the teacher thought it was a terrific movie, with Wayne maybe having his best role.

Clint is the opposite. Everything was underplayed. "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is potentially the greatest movie ever and how many words did Clint actually have in it?

One point in Wayne's favor is that I don't know of another actor who could credibly play his parts. When I think of Clint on the other hand, I automatically think of Charles Bronson. Very similar actors.

The Quiet Man was a good movie, I prefer the new True Grit over Wayne's. Even Glenn Campbell was better then him in that movie. The little girl in the original was far better.

I gotta admit that Wayne's "True Grit" isn't my favorite Wayne film, of his later films.

I much prefer "The Cowboys".

It's funny that you mention Bronson when talking about Clint. My ex gf's grandparents were big film fanatics and HUGE Bronson fans. Now I am equally as much of an Eastwood fan and every thanksgiving we inevitably got into very heated debates over Eastwood vs. Bronson, specifically death wish vs. dirty harry.

LOL!

Great story.

I think you swapped Bronson and Eastwood in many of their movies, the result would still have been very good movies, without a big difference in the overall "flavor" of films.

Clint Eastwood and it's not even close.

Plus he is a better man, he isn't a racist like Wayne was.

I am an Eastwood guy but I admit that I have not seen as much of The Duke's work as I should and that is my fault.

I really liked Wayne's peformance in True Grit and I thought Jeff Bridges did a respectable job with the character in the most recent version.

Ironically my dad got the John Wayne movie collection for Christmas so I'll have to tune in.

Outlaw Josey Wales is fantastic. Also, I think the movie Mystic River, which Eastwood directed, is excellent and maybe even a little underrated.

As far as acting goes, I would have to go with Clint Eastwood. I love John Waynes movies but Clint had so many good movies, and his role covered so much of ground, I really liked "Play Misty for Me", this movies was Fatal Attraction before Fatal Attraction with Michael Douglas and Glen Close.

You make a good point about the acting.

Yeah, I could see where someone would pick Clint as the better actor... Certainly a better range of acting skills. Many of his movies moved him from good guy to bad to good again.

Again John Wayne pretty much played the same type of character movie after movie.

I don't think high-end acting was the even on the list of priorities when it came to Wayne's movies– I think it was all about entertainment. And John Wayne's movies hit that mark many times over. The plots were simple, the actions of Wayne predicatable and the film going public loved it.

The guy was leading man in what 142 films? An amazing total.

i just honestly find him 1 dimensional.

i think sean connery is 1 dimensional also.

to me some of the best actors of our time would be be tom hanks, jeff bridges and christopher walken - although as much as i love walken he can be 1 dimensional also.

not to go off the rant, but to miss harrison ford who played two iconic characters and non of his characters blend back into another one, is just not right.

And JW was not 1 dimensional watch the barbarian and the giesha. You ll see another JW you havent seen before.
