Close the book officially on 2009

You had me until the last line with the Jerry bashing. You saying our drafting hasn't improved since 2009?

Did it have any other direction to go?

All those players would require a new contract. There is no real advantage to signing them vs another team's Free Agents.

He was a 2008 pick instead of 2009, but Mike Jenkins is an example. The Cowboys would not have both him and Carr on the team in 2013. If Jenkins had been great, he would have received the big contract instead of Carr. Either way the Cowboys would have a CB with a 50M contract.

The real value of draft picks is their contribution during their initial contract.

Not once they are free agents. Certainly value in the time that they you have exclusive negotiating rights during that players last year under contract.

Any team could have done that...only two did.
We're the only team that chose two players that are currently out of the league over them.

I am sure both Jason and Jerry laid into the scouting dept. That is the core building block of the NFL. Personally I would of fired them all at the same time.

....and so with the departure of John Philips and soon to be Victor Butler, there goes the entire draft class of 2009, as well as Roy Williams.

Four short years ago.

That should represent at least 3-4 core players on the roster right now.

Jerry is a catastrophe machine.

John Phillips was never the same after his reconstructive knee surgery. We have another young tight-end who pushed him for game time last season in Hanna. I realize some people are pessimists and always see the glass half-empty, but I see this move as half-full in that we drafted a guy we feel can help our team better.

As for Butler, I think that has more to do with the switch to the 4-3 and the Cowboys decision to keep Spencer. I think had they let Spencer go they would have kept Butler if for no other reason than insurance on a draft pick from this season. That said, I still think Butler is better suited to linebacker than defensive end and we already have several linebackers. Butler had Spencer and Ware in front of him so he is an easy target for calling a failed draft pick.

I am not excusing the poor draft history of Jerry and Company, but the major defensive philosophy switch and a new defensive coordinator will likely push out more people than it would have if Ryan was still here and the Cowboys were still running a 3-4 defense. Both Butler and Phillips are good players who will easily be picked up by other teams. A failed draft is when you draft guys who are completely out of the league after 3-4 years.

The continued lack of success of this team in regard to record is influenced by the drafting that has gone on.

Be it Bill Parcells, or a Ouija board channeling the spirit of Vince Lombardi, the fact remains the core of this team, the players who should be the mainstays from past drafts are not.

It can be argued that drafting is a crap shoot. Some of the very same people who make that claim in the past have within the last few days posted that Free Agency doesn't matter, the team will retool with the draft.

But the fact remains the results this team as shown has been fostered by the lack of true talent acquisition.

Any of 500 coaches could coach this team is an interesting thought.

Because the team being referred to was built through the drafting of players that contributed, with a key Free Agent here and there.

Seems the chickens have come home to roost since little by little this one true talent conduit continues to be a barren source of players for this team.

Any one of 500 coaches could lead that team to the Promised land. As evidenced by Barry Switzer's tenure.

But only a rare few could build a team that offered such success with whomever took the reins.

That seems to be a piece the author of the 500 coaches statement didn't understand.

2008 sucked, too. I would venture to guess that Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, DeMarco Murray and others that have been hyped up recently aren't going to be around for much longer. There is a reason their draft stock fell so much. They get hurt a lot. Call me when Sean Lee, Bruce Carter or Demarco Murray finish a season.

2012 isn't looking that great either. Claiborne played way to passive last season. The rest of the draft is still a question mark.

The scouting department must have really done their homework...why didn't we have a 1st rounder that year? Oh ya Jerry basically wiped his tush with it

That was probably the worst draft I've seen for a team in any sport in my years of following sports. Jerry and company seriously thought this team was so stacked on offense and defense that we could just draft for special teams. I mean who in their right mind actually decides to do that? Special teams players are guys you can find on practice squads and at the bottom of your roster.

Over the past 10 years or so, it seems every season we are drafting not to solidify and make our team better but to draft for missed drafts in the past and for stupid signings that did not work out. It's all a cycle that seems to never end. Can't get better like that.

This is just pitiful performance by the Dallas War room. We continue to shoot our selves in the foot and end up with mediocre depth on both offense & defense.

Now we can't buy replacements because we continue to overpay for over 30 guys and our draft fails to provide fresh players...

You don't have to be a genius to understand why we remain an 8-8 team every year without sniffing the playoffs.

butler will most likely be going to the eagles from what i just heard
