C'mon, why not upgrade at backup QB?

I read that Cleveland and Miami are showing interest in Trent Green.

If the Chiefs really want to unload QB Green, I'd think Jerra and Wade would want that upgrade over Brad "I'm Not Here to Be a Mentor" Johnson.

Johnson said the wrong thing when he said he was not here to be a mentor.
But he's half right. Romo does not need a mentor. Johnson is here to be Romo's backup. But And Johnson is long on the tooth. And Johnson might prove to be a prima dona.

Heaven forbid Romo goes down. In comes Johnson???
Me, I'd rather have Trent Green come in if Romo goes down for a play, a series or the season.

you been gone for a while or something?

johnson is more than adequate as a back up, and frankly a guy not here to be a montor only implies a chip on his shoulder and potential competition for romo in camp. I think romo reponds well to that kind of thing and as suck only see johnson as a plus rather than a negative.

You would have to do a search.

But it was out there in multiple articles and it was a direct quote from Brad Johnson. He was asked by a reporter about being a mentor for Tony Romo and he said (paraphrasing) that he did not come here to be a mentor.

Yeah, I guess many washed-up QBs could be more than adequate. I just think Trent Green is a playoff caliber QB. Not better than Romo, but much, much better than Brad "I'm Not Here to Be a Mentor" Johnson.

By Johnson's comment I infer that he thinks he can beat out Romo.
Dream on, Bradley.:laugh2:

Don't take it out of context people. He meant he isn't here to be a coach. He is going to let the coaches coach.

I think Johnson can do the job and I doubt Dallas is going to bring in another vet QB that would make no sense. I think Dallas should draft a young QB but as far as backup Johnson has shown he can do the job

Just IMHO. If Jerra can somehow unload Johnson, Trent would be an upgrade. That is all I am saying.

They tire easily of the quarterback issue. They say it's been beaten to death. They think it's been "solved". I say it's still a vital topic, especially with the draft coming up. We need to cover ourselves in the event that Romo doesn't pan out for whatever reason.

Dallas got the guy they were aiming for at the price they were looking for. As for the mentor comment you will find the vast majority of players saying the same thing. Romo has an OC and a QB coach having another person in your ear is not going to help you. I agree with Johnson when he says he was brought in to backup not coach, which is someone else’s job.

I think Dallas should draft a QB as well and Jones has indicated the Cowboys may very well draft a QB at some point in the draft. However your not going to back up 1 young QB with another young QB with no NFL experiance.

Cleveland and Miami aren't interested in bringing Green in to be a back up. They want him as a starter. Trent Green is still seen as a starter and not a back up.

Would Green be an upgrade over Johnson just from a talent standpoint? Maybe, but for this arguement I will say yes. That isn't the real question that needs to be asked.

Would Green accept a role as a backup? Doubtful. Or should Dallas compete with other teams looking to sign Green as a starter? No. The Browns and Dolphins will offer more because they are looking for a starter. Dallas does not need to outbid other teams to sign a back up.

Something to also consider is that Green may not be as good as he used to be. He didn't look good last season after returning from his concussion. In fact, he looked poor. He may be done.

Better QB or better backup QB? They really are two different positions and mind sets.

Brad Johnson was a poor choice. You'll see.:)

I would rather have Drew Bledsoe than Johnson as a backup. I still ask why not Harrington he was good with the Dolphins last year.
