Screening for Success: Jason Garrett Puts on His Tom Landry Hat

Older Cowboys hands will recall that Tom Landry was one of the best screen-calling and running coaches of his time. Landry would mix in a variety of running backs and tight end screens and displayed a sixth sense of when a blitz was coming.

Not-so-old Cowboys hands also know that for all its offensive success, the Jimmy/Barry/Chan/Dave/Bill Cowboys lost the plot when it came to calling screens. The practice has revived under Jason Garrett, but it has been used sparingly. In '08, for instance, the Garrett-led Cowboys called just 17 screens to backs the entire season, even though they worked very well.

That's all likely to change this year, and the reason may be a guy who has nothing to do with the Cowboys offense. Rob Ryan has blitzed the Dallas offense silly since practice one, and the offense has had to adjust, with quick passes, max protections, hot options -- and with screens. Lots and lots of screens...

I hope they get the execution down perfectly, with Felix and DeMarco in the fold this could be a real weapon,,, also, I hope they add a few RB routes down the field, they run too many plays that develop behind the LOS (and stay there)...

This was run fairly often in Landry's offense.

Yeah, I recall seeing highlights of Ron Springs and Tony Dorsett catching many passes downfield. I think Preston Pearson was also used mostly in the passing game too.
