Breakout Or Bust

It's always nerve-racking to write a prediction that can make you look stupid in a few months. But I'll take the heat in November if I'm wrong. Here's my take on five young players who will deliver on their promise and five who will fall short in 2007:

Breakouts

Jay Cutler, QB, Broncos - Everything's laid out perfectly for Cutler. The Broncos have the running game and the defense. Now the strong-armed kid out of Vandy has to avoid the kind of mistakes that result in interceptions for touchdowns.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Jets - Look for the Jets to run a lot this season, which will take some pressure off Ferguson, who showed major improvement at the end of last season.

Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers - You have to love his cockiness and speed. And the 49ers' other receivers aren't scaring anyone, so quarterback Alex Smith will look for the second-year TE often.

Kamerion Wimbley, DE, Browns - Wimbley, who had 11 sacks as a rookie, has the moves and speed to be the next pass-rushing star.

Santonio Holmes, WR, Pittsburgh - The Steelers say they're going to open up the offense, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been itching for a legitimate deep threat. Holmes will be that guy.

Busts

Vince Young, QB, Titans - Young's biggest problem is the level of expectation he set with his rookie season. As talented as he is, he's looking at a frustrating season in Tennessee. The Titans won't be able to match last year's eight-win total, and Young's star will fall if he leads a losing team.

Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins - Brown seems to take a tad too long to hit the hole. With his size, he should be a better red-zone back.

Marcus Spears, DE, Cowboys - One of the guys who reportedly had enough of Bill Parcells and is supposed to be reborn this year. Not going to happen for the former first-round pick.

Cedric Benson, RB, Bears - Now that the Bears have dealt Thomas Jones, there will be more pressure on Benson, who hasn't shown much in terms of leadership in his short career. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry last season, but I expect that number to dip when he's the primary ballcarrier. Defenses will know he's coming.

Brandon Marshall, WR, Broncos - He's on many people's list of breakout offensive stars for '07. But he's been nicked up in camp and may not solidify that No. 2 receiver spot.

It would suck if Spears bustificated... but it wouldn't suprise me either.

Hatcher may end up being the better player.

I thought I read that Spears had begun picking it up in the last few practices to the point that Hatcher might beat him out. Hatcher's development slowed due to his injury so that could change. Worse case scenario is Spears gets moved to DT to back up Ferguson & where down the road he eventually becomes the starter there.

Spears is more in the mold of a Richard Seymour. He should have more opportunities than last few years scheme wise. But he's never going to be a 15 sack guy. I just want a solid performance.

Canty has the biggest upside - jmo

I agree that Canty probably has more upside, but he needs to show more, too.

Both these guys failed last season, and we can't go another year with only Ferguson playing well on the DL.

We would be extremely lucky if Spears was 25% the player that Seymour is. i haven't seen much similar in their games at all.

This is kind of my hunch as well...

But it's good that the storywriter shows such justification for his opinion of our lineman.:laugh1:

I said it when we drafted him...he looked like someone that was way to soft...you can be big and not soft. Seymour, hatcher, Canty...these are big men that look like they work a lot harder. Like Lendale White...why is anyone surprised that he has been a fat boy so far in the NFL. If Spears does not show this year...he will not be a starter next year and his days in Dallas will be numbered. This will be the final nail in the coffin for the argument that we should have taken Steven Jackson instead of Jone/Spears

I still believe in Spears and if anyone can get him going, it's a guru like Wade.
I think Spears becomes a force.

The Spears prediction is not hardly going out on a limb like suggesting that Vince Young will be a bust. Some folks might argue that Spears has already established himself as a bust based on expectations and what he's produced in 2 seasons.

and these predictions ar based on what?!?! The only justification he provided for his position is that he complained about BP's scheme. If you are gonna make a prediction, it would help if you gave some reason why you picked your position.

I do not think Spears is a bust` Yet` I want at least solid play and 5 to 10 sacks` Otherwise he is a bust this year` Canty needs to pick it up as well`
