Coach Hiring Process

Maybe this isn’t directly Cowboys related but I think it is.

Why are teams allowed to hire new coaches and interview candidates when the season is still active?

Wouldn’t it be more helpful for the teams and all potential candidates if teams were not allowed to interview or hire candidates, unless it’s internal, until after the Super Bowl?

How is this directly related to the Cowboys? For one...we had our defensive play caller taking interviews during a game week in fear of losing out on an opportunity.

Also...maybe Jerry would’ve considered moving on from Garrett but not for any of the remaining candidates. Maybe our most preferred offensive coordinator candidate took a job somewhere else while our season was still going on.

This would also be a way for teams to give internal candidates a fair shot and also...those coordinators that get left out because they’re in the midst of playoff runs get a fair shot.

Seems like a win-win. I don’t see how it’s logical. If anything, the networks could promote the “coaching hiring process” and monetize it further.

Our current system is as logical as it would be if Tom Brady retires and the Patriots were able to “tamper” and get a head start on the free agent QB market before any other team.

The problem is the calendar. The Super Bowl isn't played until February these days. You have free agency starting in March. You have the Combine a few weeks after the Super Bowl. You want your staff in place well ahead of time if you can.

It’s a natural competitive advantage for bad teams. One that unfortunately means good ones have to play football games with some of their best coaches distracted in the playoffs.

It would put the teams hiring new coaches at a bigger disadvantage relative to teams that are not hiring new coaches.

Maybe they would be more careful with who they hire then so they aren’t just hiring a new coach a year later.

Well typically you already have scouts working the combine. In a perfect world, you would have your GM in place.

It looks like the Bengals are hiring a Rams coordinator...so if they win today, it’ll be the same difference. Same with the Dolphins if the Pats win.

Teams will just need to think harder before they turnover their staff every two years or work swiftly to get everything in place.

I appears thar the teams interviewing are required to come to the coach that is still coaching. The coach does not have to travel for the interview.
