It's also possible the Saints are just a better team than anticipated. They had a perfectly conceived and very well executed game plan today. Playing with discipline and focus usually pays dividends as was evident in today's game. You don't necessarily have to have an all star roster. Rather a roster of players that play their role and do their job consistently. I mean it is the NFL so to me everyone is an all star just having the talent and toughness to make an NFL roster.

We've always had flaws on our teams, but we have also had talent. There was a thread here the other day, we have what the most drafted pro bowlers since 2014?The problem has always been coaching. Dave Campo, Wade Phillips, Jason Garret was allowed to not win here for 10 years. The only guy that actually did more with less was bill parcels (and that was with a flawed roster).

We can talk offense, we can talk defense. Who's at fault. But coaching matters in the nfl, culture matters. The minute Mike Mccarthy was allowed to stay on as coach after the GB debacle it sent a message of mediocrity. I can guarantee if Bellicheck is your coach today's game doesn't happen. Because he holds guys accountable. The culture of being losers wouldn't be a thing.

News flash for everyone, every nfl roster has some flaws. None are perfect. It's coaching that makes the difference. Unfortunately it isn't a priority for this franchise and the owner. Same old story.
Agree with everything except I'm not sure about Bill. He's had 1 winning season since Brady left. Granted talent hasn't been there, but at this stage in his career is he the Bill we think he is? Probably not...

Frankly McCarthy is the best coach we've had here since Parcells, but there is a big difference between those two guys and probably speaks to the talent and time we wasted with the other coaches here. I don't know if McCarthy lives and breaths football and is truly an xs and os guy.

It is the coaching staff's duty to identify the current situation, make necessary adjustments, and then counter and take advantage of the opportunities that the Saints' strategy presents.

When has McCarthy ever done that?

As for Zimmer, it appeared he simply resigned himself to the situation today.

Good reply and I agree that McCarthy isn't the best adjustment coach. Round peg in a square hole guy at times seemingly. I thought after halftime better adjustments would be made and it just never happened obviously. The Cowboys ran into a buzzsaw today and the Saints had a better game plan. They also seemed faster and quicker. I'm concerned about the lack of speed on the Cowboys team this year.

I'm saying that if you look around football we have talent, we have always have talent. We have always been one of the more talented teams in football. No roster is perfect, its up to the coaches to get the most out of a team, and our can't and have never been able to.

Yes bellicheck struggled no Brady, but he also had a horrible team after Brady. Give him this team, I bet he can get the most out of this defense, cause he's a tactician. But he was just my example, there are so many quality coaches out there, but we keep going back to these retred type guys cause JJ has to be the smartest guy in the room.

This is a major part of what happened today, imo. The Saints are a well prepared team on offense and have caught their first two opponents unprepared or out-schemed.

Yeah...you can point the finger at long time Coordinator and seasoned coaching vet Mike Zimmer for not having the answers to stop the Saints.

I agree that we were getting gashed all over the field on defense and that is squarely on Zimmer for not stopping the bleeding.

But...MM and the OC should have taken note to what was happening early on and factored in what the Saints did last week and done something on offense to keep the ball out of the Saints hands. A quality running game would have helped eat clock and keep ball out of their hands. Better play calling to keep drives alive or elongated to give the defense rest so that they had more energy to deal with the Saints offense.

Saints might just have the coaching, talent and preparation on offense this year. Carr was diming it up. Until someone provides a blue print...they might be a tough opponent.

I predicted Mike would be fired by game 9. I don't know how this team recovers from the GB choking collapse. In fact, we just repeated it at home. Still shell shocked.

I think Belicheck would do well with this talent.

Talent matters.

Last week on the Manning podcast I liked what he was saying. Sure...its easy to call a game from your couch....but he has tons of knowledge and I dont think the game has past him by at all. Its all he knows.

Oh stop it. This is a joke of a post. How about he scheme something up to help his team. Look at what these other offensive minds do. They scheme things up. Carr looked like Elway today. That’s coaching.
Carr also had the ability to run the football and all day in the pocket off play action. There is no Alvin Kamara on the Cowboys. Their Oline is extremely high potential, but not very good right now, and they dont have a legitimate secondary receiving option.

This idea that you can just scheme up these magic plays without the players to do it just isnt reality. McVay is one of the best in the league at it, but struggled to put up points today without Nacua and Kupp. In order to scheme players open you have to either have players to dictate what defenses can run, or play in favorable down/distance situations. Outside of Lamb the Cowboys dont really have any skill players who can threaten a defense. Tolbert showed some promise today, but hes largely still a vertical route guy who needs to develop the rest of his game. Brooks had multiple miscues. Cooks is a decent player but below average by modern day 2024 receiver standards for a #2. The run game isnt good and I'm not sure there is a player on the roster who starts for another NFL team. The Oline has struggled both up the gut and on the edges.

McCarthy is moving the pocket, hes rolling Dak out, he's trying to get the ball to Turpin in space, he used all three backs today. Ultimately NO bracketed Lamb all day, forced the other receivers to win their 1V1 matchups, and was willing to give up the underneath route.

I'm just not sure what you do as of right now. If there is a good Xs and Os poster on here who has answers I'm all ears, and would love that discussion. With how both Cleveland and NO played us defensively I'm just not seeing a lot of opportunity without either some of these secondary receivers winning more matchups to get the defense to adjust coverages, or the running game being more impactful to open up the middle of the field on the play action. Its kind of like a defense earning the right to get after the QB....your offense has to win some of these individual matchups to put the defense in a position where they are vulnerable.

I have 2 problems with MM. Clock mgt and also I think he is below average with in-game adjustments.
No issue with the clock management concerns, we can all see the problems there and have for years now. Personally I just dont think this offense is as talented as people want to make it out to be, which puts the coaches at a disadvantage with in game adjustments

Very well articulated post. The run game has me concerned. The Cowboys could end up in high scoring games because they can't control the game tempo with a reliable running game. Not sure winning shootouts is a recipe for long term success since it makes a team so predictably pass oriented. Dak passing 40-50 times a game is certainly a likely possibility if the running game doesn't improve. The defense has me puzzled at this point. Good at times and bad at others. The contrast is bewildering at times. I hope the Cowboys can start to be more physical but I'm not sure we have the right players at this point. People were getting trucked today because the Saints were more aggressive and physical. The Cowboys couldn't match nor overcome that.

My tried and true debate still firmly holds water here.
The only question is the "IF" factor in both scenarios of my debate.
And those 2 scenarios are "IF" Jerry ever hired a Reid, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Payton type of HC or
IF he could ever draft a true franchise QB...

how would it affect our ability to compete for trophies?
I say we would consistently be deep run playoff contenders with those 2 positions filled by the right choices.

We would be annual playoff big boys regardless of Jerry's meddling.
I say again, regardless of Jerry meddling.

This is a coaches and quarterbacks league.
Ours both suck at playoff football.
Period.
And here we are.

I think there are a few things Jerry can do to stop the bleeding, which has been going on since the Bills loss last season.

- Take the offensive play calling away from Big Mike
- Give Zim complete control over the defense. Where is the AAGap scheme????
The AA gap stuff isn't really a scheme, its just a blitz package and its really only going to get ran a few times each game. To really run it effectively you need to get the offense into 3rd and long situations too which were rare today.

Coaching does matter but sheesh, I look at other teams and I think the talent on this team is overrated by comparison. Other teams look quick and concise. This team plods along...

Bro, this is nothing but loads of excuses. Simple as that. First of all, the saints OL and RB are nowhere near as good as what you just saw today. Second of all, they had all of these players last year and did none of this. Third, it’s not a coincidence that every Shanny disciple destroys us. And just because you don’t know what the solution is on offense doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. MM and his scheme never offers anything. It’s go out and beat your man. There’s a reason we struggle vs good teams
