Coaching Upgrade Question

First off, there is next to no one who would come in and without being involved prior to now, successfully adapt to a winning formula at this point in the season. The Cowboys are forced to ride out a rough route, unless someone quits...then responsibility moves up the chain.
Quits? :lmao:No one is leaving this gravy train unless they are thrown off.

I used to ask questions like this... if we were to get rid of whoever, who would you replace him with, but the reality is that there are plenty of guys to try. I mean who would have said give Doug Peterson a chance, most here would have said we already tried a former NFL backup QB...

You'll never be a consistent contender until you pick a quality HC and then let him pick his own coordinators and staff.

Completely agree, I wish I could edit the post to say that. I meant for McClay to hire the HC and let him hire his coaches, etc.

Thanks

Art Briles could start this afternoon.

^^^This for me. Been saying this for years. He's done his time now. This thing could be electric with this dude. Anyone remember the bowl game where all his QB's were hurt and he changes the offense to a running scheme and proceeded to rush like 500 yards? Guy is awesome.

You cant fire linehan and have another coach come in and run plays out of garretts playbook

This is for all the guys who are insisting we need to upgrade our coaching. If Linehan was fired today, who would you want to bring in as your OC to replace him?

No one as long as we're using JG's playbook. Have JG go back to calling plays or let Moore do it.

Now if JG and Linehan got canned next week (won't happen) make Marinelli acting HC (then let him retire after the season), make Richard DC (and possible HC candidate next season), Moore acting OC (then find a better one next season and burn JG's playbook).

Didn't we just have this thread a few days ago? I feel like I am in Groundhog Day...
Every season under Garrett is like Groundhog Day, especially the early bow outs, Jerry's heartfelt assumption of credit for yet another wasted season followed by inaction or deck chair rearrangement.

Best case scenario in my mind to try to salvage anything this season or get a jump-start on 2019 would be this:

  1. Fire Garrett and Linehan. They have to both go or you're getting the same bad ideas anyway.
  2. Make Kris Richard interim head coach. Give yourself the rest of the season as a tryout to see how he would do in the job. If he does well and shows promise, you gave your man. If not, you clean house entirely after the season.
  3. Hire Darrell Bevell to be the next offensive coordinator. Like Richard, I think he's a good coordinator who got the shaft from Pete Carroll. If nothing else, the man believes in running the football (save for one play someone will point to). For those interested in looking at the big picture - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/BeveDa0.htm

If you fire Linehan now, you likely aren't finding a quality OC right now to coach the team. Garrett has to take over play calling at that point.

And at this point, changing coordinators is just a worthless exercise.

If this season continues to trend as it is, there is only one clear cut correct decision. Fire the head coach and start over with a new staff.

I don't know who might be available. Probably some retread. I guess you could have Garrett calling the plays. Otherwise maybe bring in a consultant? About all that is available right now are retreads that are probably no better than Linehan.

Let's say that Garrett gets canned at the end of the season and Linehan is also fired. What direction are you going to go? A guy lik Lincoln Riley would be ideal as OC but that's never going to happen.

You could bring in some mad scientist like Mike Leach or one of his progeny, but that's dicey because we need a running game and they want to pass it on every down.

I honestly think we would have a really hard time replacing these guys with a CURRENT upgrade. Maybe The Hoodie after New England implodes after the end of this year.
a JC staff would be an upgrade. Seriously, there are plenty of coordinators chomping at the bit. The problem is that Jerry will want a puppet or a big name that can sell more tickets. Plenty of names will start rising as the season goes.

Someone mentioned Doug Pederson, and I would throw out Sean McVay as examples of guys who could be tapped. Longtime assistants or college coaches who have spent years learning their craft, learning how to manage and lead. The Rams were in a perpetual state of disrepair before last season.

Of course, the answer would not be found today, but perhaps this coming winter. Once this staff is axed, a wide net should be cast to find the right guy. The problem I see is, the search may be relegated to good friends or friends of friends, and then - what exactly will have changed besides nameplates on office doors?

Maybe we don't go down the road of fixating on someone who has spent a matter of months as a position coach someplace simply because he was once a player here tied to a fond memory or two.

If Linehan was fired today the Cowboys wouldn't have much other choice but to have Garrett take over as OC for the rest of the year. You just can't find quality coaches who want to coach mid-season. I guess they could try to lure someone out of retirement, but why would a person who wants to retire do that, and even so, how much change could they make a quarter of the way into the season?

John Defilippo is an interesting name.

I like a lot of things about Dan Campbell but i'm just worried he brings nothing to the table X's and O's wise and again we will be dependent of the offensive coordinator.

The dream is Sean Payton.

Linehan would get toasted before Garrett who would have to call the plays. That will take another 2 of these poor offensive games ending in losses for that to happen. Then Garrett would carry on the remainder of the season in what would be an inevitable beheading of the HC as we would not make the playoffs.

The only way Garrett gets the early axe this season is a combination of 2 things.

1. The players start quitting on him in games/practice like when Wade Phillips was the HC.
2. The FO wants to see how the team responds to any of the other coaching on this team which would be Marinelli/Richard. At that point I have no idea who would call the plays with Linehan and Garret gone. Kellen Moore? Thus why Garrett will likely remain to finish the season. Lol!
