This is very upsetting, these guys will be missed, but i'm sure they never gave up hope. Unfortunatelt we cannot say the same about our coast guard. I wish it didn't have to end this way.... May they Rest in Peace, who knows maybe God is jus filling his team roster. He now has a Linebacker and a DE to scratch off the needs list.

I find that vaguely disturbing. God doesn't fill out rosters, God doesn't need or use anything. To liken the likely drownings to filling out a roster in heaven is just wrong.

i am with you bro.....Corey I will see you later... R.I.P.

My cousin went to school with Corey Smith at John Marshall High School here in Richmond. God bless him and his family. That goes for the other three as well.

You took that the absolute wrong way. Everyone has a plan set for them, and unfortunately that was set to happen. Now they can play football on God's team. I wasn't tryin to make it sound like they were killed jus to play football in heaven, cause frankly that would be wrong.

this is probably a silly question and lambaste me all you want for it... would the strength of 4 big men not be enough to turn the boat back over after it's initial overturn?

Theres two things working against that:

The width of the boat, which would require a lift up into the air probably 6 feet or higher, depending on how wide the boat is. Whats a guy in a life jacket in the water stretching his arm out to the max going to be able to reach? maybe 2-3 feet max.

Second thing: The suction. The pressure would have changed inside the boat over time, creating a hold, so that when you try to lift it, it would require much more strength and momentum to right it, you'd feel the boat "sucking" into the water. Kind of like a sealed jar.

The best chance would have been if they could get to the back of the boat and work it over from there, instead of at the side. Is that possible? Who knows, I guess, it would have to be modeled in the water in those conditions to test - And then u gotta take into consideration the human factor. In all that chaos facing those circumstances and that situation...Must be a bad place, can't even really fathom it.

The two NFL players let themselves be swept away

(03/03/2009 6:11 PM)

Nick Schuyler, 24, told investigators that about two to four hours after their boat capsized Saturday in rough seas, one of the two professional football players gave up hope and let himself be swept away, according to family members of two of the missing men.

A few hours later, the second one did the same.

...

Wow. Just wow. I gotta man up here and say the full weight of this didn't hit me until I read this. There are no words for it. That really tells all. I couldn't even fathom being in that situation, witnessing that or even doing it yourself, accepting a probable fate and giving up your life...

With the T-top on that boat there is no way that boat was going to be flipped back upright. There are many things that went wrong and many things to be learned from this tragedy.

such a sad story. the worst part is no one will ever find thier bodies. do you think sharks would have got them??

It's quite possible I'm sure. Such a sad situation.

Oh man, how sad.

I dont know how accurate this is, but I read where the survivor said one of the NFL players decided to take off his life vest and drift away after about 4 hours when he had lost hope. Then the other followed suit a few hours later. The remaining one thought he saw a light and decided to take his life vest to swim to it for help.

So sad if thats true.

very sad and I don't get, if you're swimming for help, why in the world would you take your vest off?

I don't understand that.....not one bit. Let go of the boat, maybe....but take off your life preserver? That doesn't make sense to me. Someone wanna attempt to make sense of that one?

Edit: I feel for all involved, especially any youngsters that lost their fathers.

I don't understand it either, but that's out of having zero experience in that situation. It's very easy for me to say, sitting at my desk in my office, to say there is no way I'd ever give up and would just float away. I'd like to think there is nothing that would make me give up hope but you just don't know how your body and mind will react once you're out there in a situation like this.

The only thing I know is that I'd fight as long as I could with my faith in God and the thought of the faces of my children and wife on my mind to keep me going and fighting.

I don't know how long that kind of thing will hold out for a person, as I'm sure it's different for everyone, but it's very sad none the less.

I pray that none of us who don't have experience in these types of situations ever have to find out what we could do.

My prayers will be with their family and friends during this heartbreaking time.
