Anyone ever quit smoking cold turkey? It's been 8 days now...and I can't seem to get rid of a sore throat/cough I developed a few days ago(the monday night game didn't help). Has anyone else had side effects of quitting like this? How long does it persist?

I don't get sick very often, so I'm pretty sure this is a direct result of not smoking. I had a 12 year habit.

I can't imagine quitting is what caused your sore throat.
You probably just have a bug that needs to work itself our.

Gargle with some warm salt water and at other times Listerine to kill germs.
But don't go thinking you should start up smoking again to cure the problem. :D

This weather change may have more to do with it than anything else.

I know just about everyone right now has a sore throat.

Good luck with stopping the cigs too. Keep that breath fresh and that pocket fatter.

I smoked for about 10yrs and quit cold turkey, which is the best way to go... I had a Smoker's cough for about 2 weeks after I stopped which is prob normal... I mean it's gonna take some time to get the tar worked out... when you smoke the tar takes the little hairs in your throat and lungs and kinda clumps them down, and when you stop smoking they start to get back to normal which is why you are coughing so much and prob same for soar throat...

I can honestly say I still have cravings even today and it's been 8 yrs since I quit.. I mainly get them when I see someone smoking on TV... lol

Good luck. it's one of the best decisions you've ever made to stop..

I smoked for 7-8 years -- 1-2 packs a day -- and quit cold turkey. My only side effect was gaining about 20 pounds, as I think I substituted eating for smoking. Once you get to that 2 week mark, you should be good to go in terms of cravings. You'll still get the craving when you're around it every once in a while, but after a few months it almost completely goes away (and repulses you). I still smoke a cigar, maybe one or two a month. In my opinion, quitting cold turkey is the ONLY way to go.

Keep on keepin' on Tomson.

tomson, I'm giving up chew...

I understand what you are going through.

Today is day 10. . The weak point for me has always been getting drunk and buying new chew. I've tried quitting three times previously... and it always failed because I'd get wasted, end up buying chew, and start back up.

I've been drunk 3 times since I've quit.

I wanted chew.

But told myself "no."

That was more or less when I knew this time was different. I still get ocassional cravings; but I keep chugging along.

You can do it tomson. Hang in there!

I smoked for 22 years and quit 4 years ago using the patch. I also had a hell of a cough for a few weeks after I quit but it went away. The only thing that bothers me now is if I get around cigarette smoke it completely takes my breath away. I wish everyone that smokes could quit for a couple months and see how bad smokers stink, what a horrible, disgusting habit.
