Cole Beasley vs Julian Edelman

Beasley
Year 1 - 10 games, 24 targets, 15 receptions, 128 yards, 8.5 yards per catch 0 tds
Year 2 - 14 games, 55 targets, 39 receptions, 368 yards, 9.4 yards per catch, 2 tds
Year 3 - 16 games, 49 targets, 37 receptions, 420 yards, 11.4 yards per catch, 4 tds

Years 2 and 3 are pretty comparable in targets, receptions, and yards with a nice bump up to double the TD's in year 3. I think he easily could add 50% or more to those numbers this year.

I expect him to either fumble or get hurt or both every time he catches the ball, and rarely does either.. and when he does fumble he gives everyone dining options

The

The ability to avoid hits is a professional necessity for him.

At his size he's one hit away from his career being over. Against some MLBs he might give up almost 50 lbs!

In the "not for long" there always a full target hit waiting for you somewhere.

Beasley is listed at 180. Edelman is 200. That's a big difference.

Beasley is one of the smallest WRs in the NFL. I'm just not sure he'd be able to hold up if he had the number of touches Edelman gets.

I created a thread on this, and it was merged within a super thread.

Cole Beasley could be one of our biggest contributors to Murray's departure. He is essentially an extension of the running game, and can literally have a Wes Welker impact on games.

I agree.

I also believe, he can be even more lethal if we can improve at #2. Or at least T-Will improve his game a bit.

One thing that fascinates me about Beasley is how he reacts instantly upon making his receptions. His instinct for sensing what move to make to evade potential tackles and quickly find open space is uncanny. He's special.
Despite being so small, I'll be clinging to hope that his durability holds up. The LBs still will be compelled to catch him first before inflicting harm. That should prove no easy task. Hopefully, he'll be surprisingly durable whenever the inevitable contact comes his way.

Most 3rd or 4th Down Targets (Romo only), 2013-14
(ranked by conversion percentage)

Beasley 30 of 40 75.0% 356 yd 3 td 0 int 8.9 ypt 126.7 rtg 60.0% fd
Witten 42 of 65 64.6% 456 yd 4 td 0 int 7.0 ypt 105.7 rtg 55.4% fd
Bryant 35 of 62 56.5% 522 yd 8 td 1 int 8.4 ypt 117.1 rtg 50.0% fd
Williams 19 of 43 44.2% 373 yd 3 td 3 int 8.7 ypt 69.2 rtg 34.9% fd

Beasley has only 1 drop in the last two seasons as a slot receiver on any down. That's on 87 targets. League-wide, only Fitzgerald (1 drop in 99 targets) has a lower drop rate from the slot the last two seasons.

And incredibly under used, hopefully that changes this year
I wonder if he is underutilized or whether or not the Cowboys utilized him the perfect amount last year.

The key to his success in how they use him. Those short, quick routes are ideal for him. He also gets a lot of his opportunities when they go empty backfield and the defense is spread out.

In the preseason they tried giving him the T. Williams type routes and he was not good at all on those. IIRC, at least 2 of them resulted in turnovers.

Yes, I wish Dez would step up and become consistent. I'm tired of him being 3rd in consistency.

He needs to step up as well and learn to beat the double team as often. I know you are trying to he sarcastic because you hate whenever I talk about your man Williams, but I'm not like some people, I can like a player and still keep it real.

Dez still needs to work on a lot

Good info.

Where do you find interesting stat breakdowns like this?
PFF lists the player's number of targets and receptions from the slot. Unfortunately, they don't include conversion percentage yet, but I think they will eventually figure out that it deserves to be there.

Another one of my boys that I will follow til the bitter end. Have loved this guy since day one and look forward to seeing the elevation of his game as a slot receiver this year.

Same here. Some guys just have that "it" factor. He may not be the biggest or fastest, but he is super quick, has great hands, is very reliable, always seems to find a way to get the first down, is clutch, and has the trust of the QB. Put all that together and you have a VERY valuable player.

Agreed. Make him our Julian Edelman. As much as we can with the other weapons on the field. Dude is legit.

He's a quick as Edelman, but Edelman has a much stockier build which enables him to take a few more risks while absorbing a big hit.

Not that I've seen that happen, as the Pats seem to get the ball out quickly and in space...
