Cole Beasley: the cog is missing

It turns out teams realized the only one who ever gets open 1v1 is Cole.

Yet on that very play the TD was to a wide open Butler who abused his guy one on one. We have plenty of guys who can get open, but the OL is often not giving Dak time to find him, and when they do he is too often missing them.

Im a firm believer that last year went so smooth because Cole literally was our 3rd down bail out and was untouchable in the slot. When we added Switzer I was like “we are going to abuse teams underneath.” I feel like this year we are forcing it to Dez or not working it underneath. Yes Ds adjust from year to year but that is when you have to adjust and figure ways to get guys involved. Just think this missing piece isn’t mentioned a lot.

Amen!

I take out Terrance for sure. I would take them all out on different occasions. Even Dez. Give them different looks.

So your analysis is that each team did the exact same things and the result just flipped completely? What can I say, another bad analysis on your part.

I saw the Rams take advantage of the middle of the field more in the 2nd half. Challenging guys like heath and Jaylon Smith to make plays. Specifically the route for Gurley over the middle on the passing route where he scored a TD on the Jeff Heath Tackle whiff.

You want more?

I don't want more if all you're going to do is describe the plays you saw that worked in the second half. I asked you what adjustments you saw them make.

But in fairness, I already knew you had no idea whatsoever.

Teams are doubling Cole mostly on 3rd downs. Defenses watches films. They know Dak strenghts. Short range passing. So they double Beasley and they dare Dak to beat them. Dak so far has proved that he cant on a consistent basis so Dak gives teams no reason to change the way they play. Sure the success of our running game effects that as well but teams key on our run and dares Dak to beat them. Which he has not been able to. So its up to Dak to keep a defense honest when your running game is not dominant. Thats why Beasley has been invisible so far. Its not his fault.

What adjustments did the Rams make, out of curiousity? They looked to be doing pretty much the same things in both halves.

And who you taking off the field to feature the two slot WRs? Terrence? Witten? That grouping is a change of pace we could be playing around with more, but it's not going to be an offensive staple for us. I mentioned it, though, because it's something we've got the option of going to if teams are doubling Beasley.

They stopped blitzing as much.

Dak was 10 of 14 passing, 118 yds, 2 TD, 136.3 rating when blitzed.

When not blitzed: 10 of 22, 134, TD, INT, 61.6 rating

They should run Cole down the seam and have Dez run 7yd slants

Beasley runs so may out routes, it would be nice to see them throw in a corner route now and than to catch defenders over playing the out routes.

If Linehan would quit with these long and drawn out routes that take forever to develop up the numbers, and maybe try multiple crossing routes, we’d move the chains and not go from top 3 in the NFL last year on 3rd down conversions to a 38% conversion rate this year. It’s pathetic.

Our last drive, we all knew it was four down territory. We all knew the Rams would play off just enough to keep everything underneath without giving up the 1st down.

Did Linehan even think that on that final possession to win the game, 3rd and 10, just maybe get half that and keep the Rams defense honest and guessing on 4th and short? Nope!

Linehan called for these take forever routes to develop in hopes of getting 10 or more yards and a first. Wade saw it and kept calling the perfect defense.

Yeah, the clock began to become an issue, but not to the point that we couldn’t manage it till the end. Atrocious play calling by Scott!

I posted this in another thread. One of the reasons it is being forced to Dez is because teams are doubling Beasley and Witten on third down.

Just one example of many, the Cards did the same thing.

Whats really disappointing about that play is we kept the tight-end and running back to help with block their six pass rusher and we still couldn't neutralize this pass rush. Looking like 2012 all over again.

Nope. Not allowed to break away for protocol. Beaseley runs out route, Witten runs over the middle and Dez run post routes. That's all they're allowed to run.

There are a lot of dumb threads right now, and this is most definitely not one of them.

I'm not exactly pleased with the offense, but I think we are fretting over it too much.
Defenses' approach against Beasley tells us a lot about how this offense works, but as long as the offense keeps making defenses pay by putting up 4 touchdowns per game, there's not a lot to worry about. What's been missing from the last two games are a couple extra sustained drives that end in FG, and that's mainly the result of not being able to run the ball well on 1st and 2nd down.

Which is something I might be ready to start fretting over before too long, if I know how to fret.

Why aren't the WRs/TE's picking for one another?

Because our coaches are stuck in the 1980s. Meanwhile the rest of the league run them every play and get lesser WRs wide open. The pick play is about the only one the Pats run.

Or start running some bunch formations with Switzer, Beasely, and here's a new one Zeke... Also don't be afraid of running pick plays. The Rams did it several times, and on one of the TD's it was an obvious block by the first WR on Scandrick that caused him not to be able to
recover quickly enough...

They should part ways with Dez...he's an average receiver at best, and in no way deserves the the number 88.

Having Switzer and Cole out there at the same time probably tips off that it's a pass. Also, Switzer got zero playing time due to injury.

I'm not exactly pleased with the offense, but I think we are fretting over it too much. When your offense dominates the game in the first half and time of possession and your defense gives up 22 points at home in the 2nd half, I'd rather focus on that.

We are fretting over it.

They are more then capable but they thought the game ended at halftime Sunday.

If we sit Witten's *** on the bench and play Hanna all of a sudden we have a guy who can actually block on the field, and run about a 4.5 forty yard dash. It might be as simple as that. He can stretch the field. That one minor (major) adjustment could literally change the dynamics of the entire offense.
