Ok this is what I did on the second try.

1/2 head cabbage
raspberry vinegarette not too much
extra virgin olive oil not too much either
splash celery seed and poppy seed
cranraisins
salt and pepper
cayenne
2 tbsp real mayonnaise

This can be added to taste on the table:

croutons
cranberry salad with walnuts-if you add you can only add a very small amt (IMO) or you will transform it too much to something entirely different

Certainly not Mom's cole slaw but cool and entertaining

1 gallon shredded cabbage, crisped. I use 1/2 green, 1/2 purple (about two 1-lb bags)
1 quart cold water
2 c apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp salt
1/2 tbsp white pepper
3-4 tbsp horseradish
2 c mayonnaise
3 c vegetable oil
1 - 1/2 c freshly ground garlic

Crisp the shredded cabbage by refrigerating it in the water overnight. The next day, drain well and dry. ***DO NOT OMIT THIS STEP
Mix all the ingredients and let sit, refrigerated to blend the flavors for an hour.

Note: This is a bulk recipe from my catering database that makes 16-18 servings but there are several online recipe converters that will help you cut this to your desired quantity.

My mom got me used to using salt, pepper, red wine vinegar and oil. I've since added seasoning salt & celery salt. I dont care for the thick mayo based stuff much.

Like this one too. And for God sakes no sugar, yuck.

Popeyes is kind of mayo-y but i really like it for some reason.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

A lot of folks hate it and it has to be fresh, but man when it is, it is GOOOOOD slaw.

We pick up a lot of it coming home for church. We don't eat the chicken but do get the slaw from KFC.

The next time I get KFC I'll save the slaw for you. :laugh1:

I grew up on my mom's slaw so that is what I emulate...

I do NOT like sweet slaw...

Bag of pre-cut slaw
Mayo... to taste. Mix it where it looks dry as it will get soggy if you don't. You can add more mayo later if need be.
Balsamic Vinegar to taste. This is the secret.
Salt and Pepper to taste.

It's a South Carolina style slaw and everyone I make it for asks for the recipe...

If you have never tried a vinegar slaw, try this one... you won't be sorry...

That's a pretty good basic slaw.

Going with just the mayo (and no vinegar) yields what we would call "Cabbage Salad".

It's the vinegar that makes it a "slaw" IMO.

I make a pretty basic spicy Asian slaw in a casserole dish and top it with dry crushed Ramen noodles at the end. It gives it a nice little crunch. I do a big BBQ for my staff once a year and everybody loves it.
