I gotta say... after watching Carpenter come on last year when he was given the opportunity... I see this defense as "When DEFENSES Attack" kind of defenses...

Ware from one side
Spencer from the other side

Carpenter from everywhere
Roy with an occasional visit into the backfield

It just seems unstoppable... on paper...

Lets see how it translates over

Well, popular opinion says that it'll be Spencer, Carpenter, Ayodele & Ware. :D

Well, if that's what you're looking for, we definitely hired the right coach.

Wade Phillips' San Diego Defense led the league in sacks last year with 61.

Mike Zimmer's Dallas Defense was tied for 19th (with 4 other teams) in sacks last year with 34.

Sometimes change is a good thing. Sometimes change is a reeeeeeeeeeeeally good thing.

There is a good chance you will see this line up sometimes on third and long.

DL Ware Ellis Ratliff Spencer
LB Carpenter James Ayodele Burnett

I saw it mentioned some where recently that Ellis might be moved inside on some passing situations. It that is the case I like having the four best pass rushers closest to the QB.

Are you saying blitz all four like this? :D

I doubt we will see much of that, but I suspect we will see alot of Spencer/Ware blitzing.

You think we're going to play third and long with 1 safety? I certainly hope not.

Take James out of that equation, and I'm a fan.

Sorry guys but I'm not sure Spencer wins the starting job at OLB in the season opener. If Ellis is healthy, I see his experience giving him a handle up on the job but Spencer will see an awfully lot of playing time. How long Ellis keeps the starting job is another question.

It will be really interesting to see how much pressure our DL & ILBs can produce in Wade's system, particularly what Carpenter can do. I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see Carpenter beat out James but doubt he can beat out Ayodele simply cause Akin was really coming on as he become more familiar with Parcells system. In Wade's system Akin should really excel. Also hope Burnett really plays well cause we've only got Ware/Ayodele/James & Ellis (if healthy) along with Burnett/Carpenter & Spencer. So we short at least 1 LB cause Glymph is going to have to show a lot to make this team or one of the undrafted players. If not, we might be looking at any FA linebackers who could help us out.

I think you're mostly correct, but we'll see various blitzing LB packages. IMO, if Phillips cannot get pressure with one, two, three or all four linebackers, we're screwed. There's too much talent in the LB corps alone to think that we can apply consistant and adequate pressure on the quarterback every game.

I think Ellis will be around for the start of the season, I just don't think he is going to have the wheels to beat out even an inexperienced Spencer due to not being fully recovered from the injury. By season two, Spencer will be more experienced and Ellis will be older again losing his starting role.

Fill me in guys... I thought Brady was considered a player that came on strong in his 3rd year and was doing very well for the team.... then.... as we hit the skids on defense last year(2nd half of season).... Brady was continuously slammed....

Is he that bad?
Insight please.... I am curious

I still consider James' strongest asset is playing the run, but he regressed in his pass coverage skills last season. Sure, some of that can be laid at the feet of Zimmer, but I'll put the appropriate share of responsibility on the player's shoulders also. Tight ends were especially tearing him up in the later part of the season. IMO, I've seen enough of Carpenter (as small of a sampling as it is) to believe that he's an upgrade over James even at this stage of his career.

I hear ya... and I am high on Carpenter.... but how can it be that Carp is already better than James....

James=hit skids like rest of defense last year vs. Carpenter=played in what 1 1/2 games

Carp > James - how can we know this already?

When Carpenter finally got his act together, he clearly outplayed James. He's more versatile, more athletic, bigger, faster, and far better in coverage. James is still one of our best players against the run, but thats where his value ends...at least in regards to his play most of last year.
