I went to Stephen F. Austin (SFA) in Nacogdoches... BEAUTIFUL campus... it's called the University in the Pines... top forestry school in the nation and one of the best business departments in the state...

That being said, Texas has a VERY good college system. University of Texas is one of the top in the nation. Number one business school in the state and second best law school in the country. A&M has the best vet program and a top business school.

Rice is a top ten school in the nation and ranks up there withe the Ivy League. SMU (Law), Baylor (Law) and TCU are very good schools as well...

Some smaller schools with great academics include Trinity University (San Antonio), Texas Lutheran (Seguin), St. Edward's (Austin)...

I know I'm leaving out plenty...

One word of advice... start looking into financial aid NOW.

Here is a link to the ranking of every college in the nation including the cost for in and out-of-state tuition:

Yeah, Texas does have a good university sytem and several very good private schools.

Nationally ranked....
Rice is at the top at #17.
UT Austin is next at #45...but I've seen them in the top 30 before.
Tx A&M is at #58
SMU is at #62
TCU is 97th.
UT-Dallas is 143
Texas Tech is 160 (moving up)

Those are the ranked tier and tier two schools, but there a bunch more that have great campuses and certain areas of strength.

BTW, I never met a single person that did not enjoy SFA. Everyone says it was a great experience going there.

The only advice I can give is don't go to Texas for school just because you want to be close to the Cowboys (not saying that's why you want to go there). Go to the school you really want to go to regardless of location.

I would echo this sentiment. You'll have your whole life to move to Texas if that's your ultimate goal (at some point I plan to, just haven't done it yet). Don't take a myopic view of colleges just to be in the vicinity of the Cowboys.

The GF got her degree in comm. from TX State and it is one of the better programs in texas. TSU is moving up to D1 next year I think. Austin is where you want to be though if at all possible. TSU is a typical small college town but the good thing is that it has a river to hang out at and go tubing(toobing) and it is half an hour from austin, 45 minutes from san antonio and 20 minutes from the #1 water park in the world.

I do not recommend going to Texas State if you want to actually graduate. If your main goal is to party as hard as you can while in college then yes, go to Texas State. San Marcus is a freakin non stop party. Or at least it was when I was there about 25 years ago.

If you don't mind my asking, did you go to school in Texas?

Yes I did. Along with one year out of state.

Also, I don't know about you guys, but my freshman year in school taking all those freshman classes really had some of my best memories of college. If you want to get it all over with for cheap, that's fine, but if you can afford it, go to your university for four years and really enjoy them.

Totally agree with you.

You only get to experience college once, and it will affect the rest of your life. Go get the best education you possibly can.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I think the Community College idea is pretty smart for out of state students. How long do you recommend going to the Community College? Freshman year, then transferring somewhere else so I can pay the in-state tuition cost at schools like UT at Austin?

I think that's very smart to be honest.

You can go to Blinn College in Brenham to get a good college atmosphere. It is JuCo and has an athletics department (Cam Newton and Quincy Morgan played there) so their main goal is preparing students to transfer to a four year school. How long you stay is up to you, once you can transfer you might want to do it right away or stick around for a while.

Sam Houston State has a top tier program in Criminal Justice ranked nationally in the top5 annually. Lots of good colleges in this state.

Trick have you made a battle of the Piney woods yet it has conflicted with my schedule so I have not made one yet hoping next year.

This is a good idea. And our community colleges are really good over here. I know that sounds cheesy, but they are bc there is a lot cross-teaching going on between UT and ACC, etc.

The residency rules are different for each state. In Texas, my out-of-state students had to sit out of school for a year. They just worked or whatever while sitting out.

On the flip side, my sis changed her residency to Missouri by simply giving up her driver's license from Ill and living off campus.
