I was listening to a Voch Lombardi podcast this morning and he made a very good point; a good DC can get success out of a talent deficient unit. He used the Colts and Matt Eberflus as a good example. Here is their current depth chart:

DE-Houston
DT-Buckner
DT-Stewart
DE-Autry

Just 1 stud in Buckner who they traded a first rd pick for

WLB-Leonard
MLB-Walker
SLB-Okereke

Once again just 1 stud in Leonard

CB-Ya-Sin
CB-Rhodes
SS-Willis
FS-Blackmon

Average

Eberflus basically has two studs within the entire unit, yet his defense was ranked within the top 10.

A good DC, can be all of difference.

I've always said on most, if not all top defenses, you'll see a min two playmakers/studs. I don't think we had two when the season started BUT by the end, Gregory, DLaw, Wilson, and possibly Diggs certainly right there. We can build from these four....

What happened to Hooker? I thought he was going to be an All Pro Safety by now. The problem with the Cowboys defense is LVE and Jaylon have failed to live up to the expectations they had after the 2018 season. They were supposed to be two top 5 linebackers wrecking havoc. Now LVE is unreliable and Jaylon has regressed to the point that there are rumors he will be released.

what I would do immediatly is admit I made a blunder in hiring MM and I would fire him. Then I would hire Matt Eberflus as HC..keep Moore as the playcaller, then listen to Eberflus as to who he wants to hire. I imagine he would keep Edwards just because of familiarity and system.

With the right defensive coordinator and luck DLaw/Gregory off the Edge, LVE becoming an All-Pro Mike linebacker, Diggs/Wilson becoming top end secondary players and a good draft the defense will have a chance to be good.

This is so off base they have an elite player at each level of the defense. PFF grades at their position this year: buckner 4th, leonard 10th, and x rhodes 12th.

We have D law who only likes to be on the field for 60% of the snaps

By the way things are going and basing it off patterns I would say that our next head coach will be Kellen.

Dude is always hurt.

He’s played in 7, 14, 13 and 2 games each season.

I don’t watch enough of the Colts to disagree but man you see their pff scores? A lot of guys on that defense has scores in the 40’s....it’s like our defense scored better than there’s but on the field is much worse lol.

And what’s sad is that I want the Cowboys to look at him when he’s available lol....and they just might if it’s cheap.....

He would fit in perfectly with our secondary. All of them missed games lol

Awuzie, Lewis, Brown, Diggs, Robinson

Woods, Thompson, Wilson

All of them missed games lol. I think Lewis missed the least amount with one game

A dominant DT trumps a very good DE every day of the week. And I'm not trying to minimize what Lawrence does in any way. Secondly Leonard is stud LB. All we have is a bunch of disappointing guys at LB we're all trying to replace. It's not close. So with those two guys alone, Indy can control what's going on around the LOS. Conversely, our LBs are routinely making tackles 6-8 yds down the field.

Yes, Eberflus is a good DC for sure. But studs do make a difference.

The 92-93 Cowboys are a perfect example of a no superstar D with solid talent across the unit. The 2020 Cowboys have a lot of work to do with that roster

we don't have anyone that's on the level of Buckner in the interior and definitely not Darious Leonard ..that's more a difference than you realize

Absolutely.

We don't need an All Pro at every spot or fill every "hole" as long as they play as a unit....and are reasonably talented.

While Indy has few studs, what you DONT see on this list is dudes that have been all over the league, cut a couple of times, or on their last legs looking for a last payday....exactly what Dallas has been running out there of late.

BUT...yes...the difference is coaching....

I could say it a thousand times....trying to coach successfully in Dallas with the owner and his open door friends and family country club atmosphere that makes guys want to just get paid and be a celebrity rather than win football games is next to impossible.

That's just two elite players. We can argue we have two in DLaw/Gregory.
