Speaking honestly, after the Seattle playoff game last season, the Commanders were probably the odds on favorite to win the NFC East and certainly a contender to challenge for the NFC crown. And this was before Al Saunders and the upgrades to the offense, secondary, and defensive line.
Naw, too much uncertainty.
Yoiu guys did make some nice additions but seemd to universally overpay. Suanders is an odd hire because Gibbs was an offensive genius winning titles back when Saunders was coaching WRs.
Randel El is a nice complimentary player but the problem is he's not a very good WR. He's not a starter there and he was paid 31 mil. Yikes! Now Brandon Lloyd I like, but he's got a lot of Antonio Bryant in him. He drops a few too many passes and is generally inconsistent.
Archuleta over Bowen is a minimalistic upgrade. Bowen was being lauded last year as a solid glue guy. Archuleta is another hitter with iffy coverage skills.
Look at your off-season:
Subtractions:
March 10 S Matt Bowen Released
March 10 P Tom Tupa Released
March 10 CB Walt Harris Released
March 10 DT Brandon Noble Released
March 10 C Cory Raymer Released
March 10 DE Melvin Williams Released
March 6 LB LaVar Arrington Released
March 17 QB Patrick Ramsey Traded to the New York Jets for an undisclosed 2006 draft pick.
Additions:
March 15 DE Andre Carter Signed to a contract
March 14 LB Khary Campbell Signed to a contract
March 13 S Adam Archuleta Signed to a contract
March 13 WR Antwaan Randle El Signed to a contract
March 13 TE Christian Fauria Signed to a contract
March 12 WR Brandon Lloyd Acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2006 and a fourth-round draft pick in 2007.
All in all you have swapped Carter for Arrington; both best served as OLBs in a 3-4.
Swapped Bowen for Archuleta and lost your nickel corner in Walt Harris.
Added small WRs to build depth there. Good moves but high priced ones as well.
Gave up the backup QB for a 6th, let the punter go, and generally gave up depth.
Added a 2nd TE in Fauria, STer in Campbell and lost the backup OC.
You did not sign a single guy who was a Pro Bowl caliber player last season or even in the mention of one. Carter has had 6.5 sacks in 2 years and is weak against the run.
Randel El has never caught 50 passes and has never had more than 3 receiving TDs in a season. Lloyd is another guy whose never reached 50 catches in a season and has struggled with consistency.
Its not so say there weren't some good moves in there but all in all the Skins off-season has been more see saw than ballast. The Skin's fans view it as a moon shot when its really a Texas League blooper over second base.
It would not at all suprise me if the the guy with the most sacks of all Commander players including the ones released this off-season is Lavar Arrignton. Nor would it suprise me if Ramsey ended up with the highest QB rating.
