Former 49er's cause of death not announced

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Former NFL linebacker Kevin Mitchell died in his sleep at the age of 36.

Mitchell died overnight Sunday at his home in Ashburn, near the Washington Commanders' training facility, according to the team. An autopsy was performed Monday by the Virginia state medical examiner's office. The cause of death was not immediately announced.

Mitchell was drafted in the second round out of Syracuse in 1994 by the San Francisco 49ers, who moved the undersized college defensive lineman to linebacker. He played with San Francisco until 1997, then signed with New Orleans (1998-99). He played his final four seasons (2000-03) with the Commanders. "Anyone who knew him was touched by his smile, joy for life and love of his family," Washington owner Dan Snyder said. "Anyone who ever played with him or against him never forgot it. He earned our deepest respect."

That is horrible ...... he and his family are in my prayers
This is one of those few times where the rivalries between our two teams means absolutely nothing. Rest in peace, Kevin Mitchell, and God bless.

RIP and best wishes to his family during such a terrible time.:(

I've had season tickets to Syracuse Football for 16 straight seasons. Kevin Mitchell was one of the most intense, toughest SOB's we ever had here at SU, not to mention just a great guy and leader.

This is very sad stuff here. Very sad. Thoughts and prayers out to everyone close to Kevin, his family, his friends and everyone affiliated with Syracuse University.

Yep, my father and I had season tickets for Syracuse football (and basketball) for nearly 20 years. Kevin Mitchell was one of my favorite players growing up. One of the amazing things about him was he played defensive tackle (and a lot of nose guard) while at Syracuse and simply manhandled opposing centers and guards with his energy, effort, and fiery play. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

I always thought the rivalry meant nothing anyway.

Lot of class shown in this thread, even from some that are typically vicious to rivals. Kudos to all.

RIP

And 36 ? Thats entirely too young.

Things like this make me appreciate the things I have accomplished and experienced.

So sad and so young.

My deepest condolences to his family and his extended football family.

RIP

That's just it. The guy was really a LB that spent A LOT of time at NT. Think about that. He was tough as nails and relentless as hell. I'm not exaggerating when I say he was one of my top 3 SU players of all time. That includes McNabb, Freeney, Moose Johnston, Marvin Harrison, D. Darius.....this list can go on forever and a day.

Yazuka, catch up with me...we'll have a beer sometime at the SU game(s).

RIP Kevin.
