The bottom sign was common in the Jim Crow segregated South. The Commanders were the last NFL team to allow Blacks.

A Washington, DC sportswriter, Shirley Povich, once wrote a line after Jim Brown and the Browns trounced the Commanders. It was haunting, funny, and really incredibly sad.

This is not the exact line, but it is close.

"Jim Brown, who was born genetically incapable of playing for the Commanders..."

Shirley Povich also said one time that the Commanders colors were "Burgundy, Gold and Caucasian."
