Using the Pro Football Focus rankings (yeah I know not everyone "likes" those, but what the hey) I compared the Cowboy's offensive line of 2011, to those of the prior 4 Super Bowl winners:

Cowboys 2011:
T-5th
T-53rd
G-19th
G-46th
C-30th

NYG 2011:
T-30th
T-65th
G-61st
G-46th
C-25th

GB 2010:
T-40th
T-70th
G-2nd
G-43rd
C-8th

NO 2009:
T-10th
T-69th
G-1st
G-4th
C-14th

Pit 2008:
T-14th
T-23rd
G-49th
G-72nd
C-38th

Good job! Very interesting......if these numbers are accurate reflection of each teams O lines then it means we have had poor execution vs poor players .....right?

do these statistics take into account run blocking?

Wow, Doug Free was the 53rd ranked tackle in the league last year? The front-office can't feel very good about giving him 4y $32m ($17m guaranteed) last year it terms of the return in investment on his production.

I'm <hoping> the move to RT will help Free this season.

At the end of the day - none of this matters

People want to look at offensive line of previous winners, or secondary, or dline.. It doesn't matter.. There is not one specific way to do it.

The nfl is all about matchups/getting hot at the right time/ and executing. If this team can do that with a worse OL than other winners then so be it.

Every team has weaknesses...I can find evidence to support a team with any deficiency can win a championship.

If a team can win with a ****ty quarterback, surely, a team can win with other ****ty parts

Yes, there system takes into account both run and pass blocking.

Like I mentioned in my post there are folks that have "issues" with PFF's rankings or how they do it but, if you compare the rankings with what is accepted generally speaking about certain players (for example the two New Orleans guards ranked 1st & 4th during their SB season– or that the Cowboys center didn't didn't rank very well in 2011) their rankings seem to have some amount of relevancy.

I think you make some valid points.

The Giants truly had a bad offensive line last year, but they had a very good defensive front 4, a hot QB and three very good wide receivers. All in all that spelled "Championship"... regardless of how bad their offensive line was.

No way in the world that Free was the 53rd best tackle in the NFL last season. Thats absurd. Its also equally absurd to believe Smith was the 5th ranked tackle last year. They both gave up 9 and a half sacks last season. In Smiths defense he was only a rookie,.....but In Free's defense he was playing the LEFT tackle position.

Just sayin....numbers can be bent and reshaped to mean anything you want them to in most cases.

I agree, those numbers are useless in the real world

First off, I'd suggest visiting their site for an explanation of the "formula".

Secondly as stated in one of my posts, their results do quite often jive with what fans think, i.e. Costa did not play well last year & the two guards for New Orleans were very good.

It's not like their formula showed Costa as a top-10 center.

Why would Free being the 53rd best tackle in the NFL be absurd?

The rankings ALSO consider run blocking.

My issue is that I don't care about other olines, just the Cowboys. I refuse to set my standards at the average level. Comparing the lines to other teams still doesn't excuse the fact that Romo and Garrett's offense would improve greatly with a good line.

If you believe in the numbers than i respect that.. To me whats the difference if Free is ranked 53rd or 46th... What does it truly matter? The only thing I care about is how their performance translates into success on the field for this football team... NUmbers to me mean nothing..

Right off the bat I see the Cowboys had the worst center play of the bunch, cant tell on your Steelers stat. Nothing to do with it other than a rising tide lifts all boats but all those teams peaked at the right time.

I agree with this.

I did not post the ratings to suggest that the Cowboys Oline is "good enough".

Because last year's version wasn't.

Still waiting to see about this years.

But I think the comparison is still interesting.

You know what I care about.. If its 3rd and short in the 4th quarter of a tight game and we get the first down running the ball... I care about if we pass block in a crucial part of the game when needed... To me thats all that matters.. I could care less about silly numbers and where some guy ranks our O line..

I think what you typed there has some merit.

I wasnt' knocking your believe or that numbers fact. IF you believe in, like I said I can respect that.

not surprising the biggest apologist for our lousy O line would start this thread
