As with the Offensive Line Comparison thread, this thread compares the Cowboys' 2011 secondary with those of the last 4 Super Bowl winners using grades supplied by Pro Football Focus.

Cowboys 2011:
S-29th
S-55th
CB-40th
CB-97th

Giants 2011:
S-6th
S-86th
CB-22nd
CB-52nd

GB 2010:
S-13th
S-45th
CB-8th
CB-55th

NO 2009:
S-14th
S-21st
CB-9th
CB-34th

Pit 2008:
S-2nd
S-22nd
CB-18th
CB- 9th/46th (the Steeler's had two guys playing almost exactly the same number of snaps)

Dang, we had a pretty piss poor secondary a year ago. Funny how three of the four are no longer starting.

What formula did PFF use for this?

I read something from PFF that the Falcons were a better defensive line than the Ravens because the Falcons hit and pressured the QB more than the Ravens.:laugh2:

The methodology PFF uses is explained on their site.

Here's a comparison of the top-4 (by snaps) defensive linemen for the Ravens and Falcons:

Ravens:
Suggs +40.2
Ngata +19.8
Redding +14.2
Cody -7.0

Falcons:
Edwards +1.2
Abraham +37.3
Peters +1.0
Babineaux +14.3

Certainly the methodology used by PFF to grade players can be questioned, but the results generally speaking seem to agree with those impressions carried by the average fan, for example guys that are held in high regard like Suggs, Ngata and Abraham rank high where someone like Cody or Peters not so much.

Ok I understand, well back to the topic. I noticed that each SB team had a Safety in the top 15. The Cowboys need a game changer at safety and I hope it is Church this year.

Yeah, got that message too.

If not a top-15 safety, then they both need to be higher than 29th and 55th.

I've never really considered Sharper as great as most people do, but in Williams' scheme he was fantastic.

I really think Sharper was what put their defense over the top and able to win a superbowl.

Don't pay attention to this nonsense. It's all about the pass rush.

I was doing a different secondary comparison in my head last night. You might like mine better.

Secondary number 1.

1. Newman
2. Jenkins
3. Scandrick
4. Ball
5. Walker
FS Sensabaught
SS Elam

Secondary number 2.

1. Carr
2. Claiborne
3. Jenkins
4. Scandrick
5. Butler
FS Sensabaugh
SS Church

Compare those in your head for aminute...then smile.

I would like to see (I mean who wouldn't?) the defense get up to say 50 sacks this season (almost a 20% increase), but obviously the folks in the secondary needed to be changed.

When the highest ranked Cowboy defender (and the only one still starting) would only be the 3rd highest in any of those other secondaries... Well, you know you have a problem.

Oh geez, "light years" better. ;)

The offensive line could be a little better than last year... But it won't be dominating.

The defense though...

I think we're looking at potentially a very good Dallas defense.

Combine that with the uneven offensive line, but with decent talent at the skill positions– I'm thinking this is a playoff team.
