Anyone familiar with how this process works ? If we lose Jenkins , f jones , and Anthony spencer this offseason that's 3 first round picks . I would think we would be rewarded with some great extra 3rd or 4th rounders next year ?

don't know the answer but that right there is concerning

yet another example of how poorly Jones has drafted and managed the cap.

it depends on the contracts those guys get, their production, and what free agent signing we may do which offset the FA losses as part of the equation. really no way to determine anything at this point.

Not neccessarily. Spencer would normally be re-signed, so it's not like he is a bust. Jenkins isn't a bad player either (though he is soft), he just can't stay healthy.

Felix Jones is the only true bust of the three.

true....meant more so that we are at risk of losing 3 players that we spent 3 first round picks to acquire.

It would depend on if we sign any unrestricted free agents ourselves, and how big of a contract or UFA's get. Spencer could likely net us a 3rd rounder, the rest maybe 7th's.

Great teams do this as well and it's not an issue. The Patriots hvae let Brandon Meriweather, aurence Maroney, and Benjamin Watson all walk at the end of contracts and it hasn't impacted them. The key is to lock up your core players and be good enough in the other rounds to easily reload.

If they walk there will be a gap that ranges from 2005 to 2010 of no 1st round picks still on the roster.

And we wonder why we can't get over the hump...

We have a number in mind for Spencer and will not exceed that, we have the money if he chooses to accept that number. He turned it on in a contract year but outside of that he's been an average player throughout his career. It's important to keep that in mind during contract negotiations and I'm glad to see the FO is doing that and not being blinding from this last season.

And the FO thought so highly of Jenkins that they shelled out a 50 million dollar contract for Carr and traded up to the 6th spot to ensure he wouldn't start this year. He's a bust.

That's the right answer.

I saw a tweet from Bob Sturm that said they Cowboys have not traded a player on their roster for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick since Jimmy Johnson was the coach.

That's just incompetent GMing.

I disagree on Spencer and you'll see NFL teams think highly of him as well by the size of his contract. He is one of the very best 3-4 strong side linebackers in football.

don't know much on the workings of this.....is it a quantitative or qualitative type determination?

I believe both. I think the size of the contracts involved also matter.

Since we'll most likely be sitting out this FA, I'd expect a comp pick or two next year.

He was last year. He wasn't for most of his career.

We manage the cap well. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand the cap

Who should we have traded? Greg Ellis? Darren Woodson? Witten/Ware/Miles?

He might have botched the Joey Galloway and RW trades, but it's not like he's had a lot of options on the flip side.

I think someone will overpay for Jenkins, getting us a 4th or 5th, which might make a bit of a difference.

Bengals offered a second rounder for Marty B a couple years back... should have/could have...

I have yet to see anything verified about that. There was a rumor for a while, but I don't know if it was actually ever reported as such. The clearest the story was that it was a "significant" offer. I think that a 2nd round pick was just speculated on at that point.

...but yeah, even if it was a 4th, we shoulda done it :)
