So I ended up picking out this one. It'll serve my purposes until I can get the monster laptop. Win 8, Intel, 4GB ram, 500GB hd --->> http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/480493/Lenovo-Flex-2-15-Dual-Mode/

Lenovo® Flex 2 (15) Dual-Mode Laptop Computer With 15.6" Touch-Screen Display & 4th Gen Intel® Core™ i3 Processor, 59425111

More or less what I suggested. Extra 2 GB ram.

Good girl ;-)

for a stop gap Laptop you did the right thing. Now I have had 2 toshiba's and they have been fine machines for me. Had HP as well also good. Dell you are paying for the name frankly.

AMD is just fine anymore - there is no real quality or performance difference between Intell and AMD and once again like with Dell you are paying for the name as regards Intell.

Expandable RAM above 8 GB is a must for your monster LAPTOP. I am guessing you want to keep it 5 years or more and that means at least one and probably two more Windows Operating Systems and of course RAM requirements to run them well will keep increasing.

The downside of SSD is that they wear out

and they are expensive.

looks good. memory is expandable to 16gb, and the i3 processor is going to run very cool for you. you will actually be able to hold this laptop on your lap.

Yea, just to echo what everyone is saying SSDs are nice, but expensive, so if you only want to spend $400-$500, that really isn't on the table. It's also likely overkill for what you want to do with it.

SSD has some other drawbacks as well. Mechanical drives generally give you warning before going out, and even when they do go out, it is usually not the drive itself, but the card interface.

SSD will give no advanced warning. a quiet death is what you will experience.

Ok. Windows 8 is kicking my butt. I downloaded the Classic Shell too, so that helped considerably. How is that these computers have no starter guide in the box? A little navigation thing for Windows would be so helpful.

Look in the Dell outlet, they are some of the best deals around.

Also if you want the old Windows start menu, you can download Classic Shell for free. It makes the learning curve much easier.

Edit: Guess I should of read the whole thread before posting, lol

So far only thing I got working is the Start menu and for that I'm grateful. lol

I *think* I've figured out how to switch back and forth between the apps look and desktop. That took awhile to figure out.

Oh the reason I asked is because I disabled the tiles because they would switch over at the most inopportune times.

Let me know if you need to do that,..

Ohh... Yeah, I'm not sure I've disabled anything, but so far, it's not switching on it's own. The problem I was having at first was being on the tiles and not knowing how to get back to the desktop. I think I figured that out last night, tho.

Go to

http://www.classicshell.net

Download install. You will get your windows 7 start menu (bottom left) to return :)

You will feel reborn lol

thanks :)

One of these days, I may ask ya how to upload pics from my iphone to my laptop picture folder in windows 8. Can do it easily to 7, but 8 won't allow me for some reason.

Not today though, don't feel like stressing :)
