Concern with re-signing Jason Hatcher

Short and sweet:

If the Cowboys re-sign Hatcher to a 2 or 3 year deal, do you believe the team would pass on Aaron Donald (assuming he's on the board at #16) in the draft?

I think it would be a monumental mistake and I can see it happening.

No.

They moved up to get Claiborne after signing Carr to big money.

No I don't think it would change anything. Dallas needs help at DT getting Hatcher resigned still would not change the need for help on the DL

I agree, get someone younger either a Melton, Donald, Jerrigan or Ealy. FA or Draft just need some youth and playmakers on the DL.

It's not the money Hatcher wants it's the age and just getting in some hungry attitudes.

But they needed a starter at corner. This was before Scandrick stepped his game up.

They had already extended Scandrick 5 years also about a year before then.

But you have a point. They kept trying to beat it into our heads that "In this day and age, you need 3 starting corners".

Doesn't exactly create the log jam that Hatch might.

Still. I think they know they need to get younger.

I'm with you, but I'm afraid of the Cowboys going, "We passed on Donald because we already have our 3 technique in Jason Hatcher."

Just like the Cowboys possibly passed on Floyd because they assumed Tyrone Crawford would step in as the 1 tech.

Depends. I truly believe the Cowboys have to get at least three starting caliber defensive linemen this offseason between free agency in the draft. If they re-sign Hatcher or somehow swipe Henry Melton away from the Bears (possible with the Texas/Rod Marinelli connection), I still think they go d-line in the 1st and 2nd round. They can't take the "best available" route this year. They need the depth.

Even with Hatcher on board, the Cowboys still have the 2nd worst starting DT in the NFL listed as a starter (Hayden).

I don't see the Cowboys not selecting defensive tackle within the first 3 rounds of the draft in addition to signing one as a free agent.

No way Hatcher should make more than Ware who gets a big paycut. This just might work out. I am in favor of offering Hatcher a 2 year contract at 7.5 m total

How would everyone feel with this starting DL?

Ware (reduced salary), draft/FA, Donald/Hatcher, Crawford

I wouldn't rule out Brent coming back at some point either...

It's a mistake to lock in on Donald or any other player when you're picking where we're picking.

Besides, we might very well need not one but two starting ends. We could use our first on one of those.

Looks good, but I have a feeling Crawford is playing tackle. This team really likes what George Selvie did at left end (7 sacks, 32 pressures). Crawford has the frame to get back up over 300 pounds and is a much better athlete than Nick Hayden, last years' starter.

I like Ware/Selvie at end; Donald/FA and Crawford inside.

I don't know but I'd be very concerned if Selvie is a starter for next season. He's the perfect backup/rotational guy, but we can definitely do better I believe.

Yeah, but Hatcher isn't going to play the nose like Hayden -- he said he had planned to ask for a trade before Rat was hurt because he hates the nose

Crwaford wasn't projected as the 1 tech. Hatcher was.

My dream is that we draft nothing but OL/DL in the draft.

I hope the need at DL doesn't keep us from taking a stud OL in the first if he is there. We can be an elite offense with great blocking. We just need to get to middle of the pack on D if the O is humming

Floyd dropped as far as he did for a reason. Not picking him was the right move, even with how things worked out on our DL.

If they re-sign Hatcher AND draft Donald, think they would slide Hatcher over to the 1 tech and play Crawford at strong side end?
